Does this answer pertain to miles for tax payments made with United Visa too, or only to ones done with SPG AmEx? I see miles = $s for taxes in my UA MP account now, but not the additional ones I expect to get with this "double miles" offer. Why should "base points" (why distinguish "base" from "bonus," any practical significance to such a distinction?J) credit with the next monthly bill, but "bonus points" only credit 1-2 months later? Is there some "logic" to this, perhaps relating to how they handle the accounting of them? (I am a relatively new SPG AmEx card holder and have not looked into the status of my points from tax payment with it yet, only the miles from that portion of my taxes paid with UA Visa.)

The "double miles" promo with UA Visa is continuing, so should be able to pay quarterly fed and other taxes throughout the year. And no cap on amount eligible for the double miles!

"Double miles" deal with SPG AmEx was capped at $5K, and offer was to end 4/17/06, so not there for payment of taxes at a later time.

CitibankAA "double miles" deal cheaper than UA Visa and SPG AmEx ones (1.99% vs. 2.49% "convenience fees"), but I don't hold that card, nor participate in AA FFP, so don't know more. Is CitibankAA double miles promo still open, so might pay taxes with it later in year?

So...will these "double miles" deals be continuing or recurring opportunities? (If AA one still there, I will look into that card and possibly use it to build miles with AA.) Any other twists or wrinkles to these deals, which seem to me very good? Are there other cards to consider for this purpose, that is accruing substantial miles at very reasonable prices? (I wonder if WSJ coverage boosted use of the cards for tax purposes. Would an increase in their use for this purpose be a good thing for us, perhaps encouraging more competition among card companies to get still more business, with added inducements, like lowered "convenience fees"?)

I think they will. This is cash now, travel later for United, Delta and others. At about 1.3 cents per mile, they are essentially selling miles to the retail public at wholesale prices. It's smart for them, and often smart to buy them (depending on one's abilty to make good use of the miles).

I have a Delta Plat. Amex and charged about $128,000... I had to send in a check and have it post to my account before I could make the chrage... Waiting for my bonus miles

I hope you're a DL elite. I have that same card and am limited to 100k bonus miles per year. While I'm not sure, I think there is a higher limit, or no limit, for certain DL elites.

I will have a large (one time) capital gains tax estimated payment due for

I don't use United but I do AA, starwood, even GMAC?

Look into the CitibankAA card deal (see earlier posts in this thread). No true "bonus" for doing your civic (and legal) duty of paying taxes, but you will be able to acquire AA miles at 1 cpm, which is pretty good, especially if you have a use for miles.

The slip I received with my AA Mastercard CC statement describing the 1.99% AA deal says it expired 4/17/06.

Same thing happened to me. My "normal" posting just hit. I seem to recall in the T's & C's that the bonus points take 6-8 weeks to hit. Unfortunately I owed The Man quite a bit this year, so it's an extra 5k for me.

The double miles are only in conjunction with the annual IRS filing, hence the expiration -17 April. This will probably be around next year, as it has been an annual event for a few years now.

SAdly, I think our CPA is going to inform me the estimated tax payment
must be made this summer. I assume just putting it on my CitibankAA
or GMAC card would not be worth the fee they change since I won't be

Yes, the consensus here is that paying retail (about 2.6 cpm) only makes sense when you're trying to top off a balance to get to an award level.

There is a relatively happy one (2.49% rather than 1.99%) if you do it through a UA Visa card, since they will give you double miles for taxes payments made at any time of year.

They don't fly out of the city I live in so I have never been in their FF
program.
