Garment bags

More paranoia here.
Trip coming up within a week, and I was going to take my garment bag carry-on (folds over nicely, not a lot of room). However, it has the clothes hanger hooks coming out the top! Obviously these metal hooks are more dangerous than even fingernail clippers!
What is your experience with taking garment bags through security? Are metal hanger hooks a problem??

I'm not sure, but my father has been travelling these two weeks with a garment bag, and his has a metal hook as well... But if you can, I would just use a plastic hanger (one of those sturdy ones), just so that the clueless security people won't give you the least bit of hassle..

There are LOTS of things that we take on the plane, or could find on the plane that could be dangerous.

Do not try to use any logic on any of this. There is none. After Sept 11th, you could pull out a 12 inch knife and try something, but unless you got into the cockpit before someone stopped you, you would NOT be able to use the plane as a weapon. Therefore, all this time and money being used for "security" is of little value.

That was then, this is now.

I had no problems with a garment bag this past week. Not sure if you are trying to be ironic, but the metal hangars seem to pose no risk -- I'm talking about those metalic hook, but plastic-molded shoulder and not those el cheapo completely wire hangars.

I've traveled several times since 9/11 with a lightweight garment bag with the tops of a variety of hangers, including the cheap wire ones from dry cleaners, exposed and have not had a problem.

You never know what they'll confiscate. Last night they were back to taking disposable razor cartridges at EWR. Lost a brand new pack of Mach 3's. Not to mention they confiscated my girlfriend's tweezers. Logic has gone bye-bye. I'm all for increased caution and security, but would it be too hard to ask for a little consistency and reason? Just my 2 cents.

Flightrisk, I was being semi-ironic, but also quite serious.
Guess I'll be careful, and use the bulky plastic hangers. My usual wire hangers are quite sturdy, but I will avoid hem for now.
And so it goes ...

Friday I arrived at a nameless airport for a return flight to AUS. The line to check luggage was long and I was running late, so I decided to see what would happen if I tried to pass my suitcase through security as a carry-on. It contained various weapon-like things (including my pocket knife) so I expected to be turned back.

Surprise, it went right through the X-ray screening without a complaint!

Should not surprise anyone that travels and reviews what is going on. They can not catch it all. No does it matter.

And by the way, I am NOT suggesting tighter security.
