Best airline meal ever had

Yes, you can post under the "Worst" forum but
maybe we can look at the other side of the menu with the best airline meal you ever had.
(Sounds like a contradiction!)

I posted my several memories under worst!

"NO MEAL" gets posted here and it should be under worst, also.

LHR-JNB, late last year, on BA (of course)

Having already served us several times, the flight attendant gave myself & the two gentlemen from the IMF seated beside me a full bottle of chateauneuf de pape. I think another one may have followed, but I stopped before we reached that point.

I can't remember what we ate...

actually, best was about 10 years ago on an evening (7:30 pm) flight from Norfolk to Atlanta on Delta---it was a cold plate in coach (not a special meal), and it was just great--a scoop of chicken salad, a scoop of cottage cheese and a scoop of potato salad--tomato wedges etc--each one fresh and good, just perfect for the time of day, length of flight, etc etc. Best in business class-Air Canada from YVR to OSA 2 years ago--the bento box was TERRIFIC--much better than NW from ORD-NRT (I'm certain that Japanese food in the Vancouver area would naturally be better than that in Chicago). I also liked flying Korean Airlines in business class 2 years ago--the food was good, plentiful, and interesting.

United Airlines, 1984, LAX to Honolulu on a stretch-DC10.

The meal was coconut shrimp and sushi. Not my first time at coconut shrimp, but first time I'd ever had sushi.

BOTH were unbelieveably good. Never had a meal like that since on a plane, but that one was right up there with the best food I've ever eaten at a $50+ each restaraunt.

To die for...

Easy call on this one:

MGM Grand LAX/JFK. Shrimp skewers (marinated in some kind of spicy ginger sauce). Fresh salad with crisp fresh veggies. These were accompanied by a delicious and properly chilled Pouilly Fuisee.

Beef Wellington (prepared in the on-board galley by a chef in a real toque) done absolutely perfectly -- melt in your mouth delicious. Perfect mashed potatoes -- creamy and yum. Asparagus with Hollandaise. Accompanied by a Chateau Neuf-de-Pape Cab (don't remember the vintage), followed by a sorbet.

Dessert was Bananas Foster over an incredible vanilla ice cream. Followed by cordials.

Nothing in the world compared with the style, the service and taste. Before or since...

Don't even remember what the specific food was, but about 13 years ago we headed to Hawaii. Used miles to upgrade to 1st--it was a lot easier back then. When one of the FA's twisted her ankle, amazingly enough, there wasn't a doctor on board. So, my wife, a nurse, volunteered to assist and checked for a break, and then expertly wrapped the FA's ankle to keep it immobilized. Well, once she had assisted, the other FA's were great to us--seconds on everything. Best wines on board. Very attentive service. Best flight we ever had.

I think Eli's of Chicago provides the cheesecakes on board UA flights. They are very good indeed.

DJLawman... it's sad that it's been 13 years since you got an excellent meal... I hope you get something great soon!

Rudi... I would be more than happy to boost you business. Just tell me how. (Like if your products are sold at Morell's on Madison.) I think the only way to boost my business is for everyone staying in NYC to leave my station NY1 on day and night in their hotel room. CATMAN

Yes, Eli's does the cheesecakes on United, at least out of ORD. I think they are available somewhere at the airport, but they are always available at local supermarkets. If you have a craving, you just need to take the Blue Line from ORD 2 stops (to Cumberland). Just to the north of the expressway is Dominick's, which is a pretty good supermarket. Don't forget to buy a transfer when you leave the airport so you can get back to the airport (RT is $1.80). If you have some more time, Eli's has a cheesecake museum/factory (yes, really) not too far from the airport (roughly at Irving Park and Harlem). It would be a little complicated to get there on public transport (take blue line to Harlem, then a SB Harlem bus) but would be a pretty quick cab ride right from the airport (take a regular cab). I understand there are free samples, and on the way you drive right past the Maurice Lenell cookie factory on Harlem (ditto on the free samples, and it smells wonderful).

A DELICIOUS OMNI POSTING!!!

Jamiel... thanks for the cheesecake and cookie tips. When I get back to Chicago again I will have to take a few hours for
some sweet exporing.

I also like Chicago for Marshall Field's and
(while not as great as Rudi's Swiss or Belgians) their Frango Mint chocolates. I can go through a whole box in about 10 minutes.
(The Swiss chocolates take 2.5 mins, have not had REAL Belgian.)

Now I'm craving for my birthday cake (strawberry shortcake!) CATMAN

Okay, time to make all of you hungry...this meal was so good, that I saved the menu.

KLM business class MSP-AMS May 1997:

Appetizer: Lobster served with mango coriander salsa and saffron sauce and enhanced with black currants and thyme

Acommpanied wine: Riesling 1995, Cuvee Tradition Kuentz-Bas, Alsace (very good)

Dinner: Texas rib-eye steak grilled to perfection (I do not know how on a 747!). barbecued with a mesquite glaze and offered with spicy and crispy onion rings and sweet potato.

Accompanied wine: Savignon Blanc 1996, Villa Maria, New Zealand (good to almost very good)

Dessert: Vanilla creme-brulee served with a caramel crust, almond biscotti and fresh raspberries.

Accompanied port: Grahams Vintage 1990 (good)

After a movie with chocolate covered strawberries and a brief nap....

Brunch: fruit salad, various Dutch cheeses, smoked salmon, tomato basil quiche and a perfectly brewed cup of coffee.

Briefly, the return trip to the US included...

A wonderful appetizer of smoked trout enhanced in ginger-garlic dressing, a dinner of Sesame-coated salmon accented by a peppercorn sauce, presented with a lemon risotto and carrots. Dessert was a memorable apple cheesecake and Belgian chocolates.

KLM is the best airline in the World. End of subject. (okay, I've never tried Singapore or Thai....)

Catman,
I never touch the cheesecake on my tray so you can always on mine. Now, you just have to get on the same flights!
