PalmPilots, anyone?
Picked up a palmIII a couple of weeks ago and haven't set it down since. Any recs for travel schedule-ff mileage trackers? A product called traveltracker is a schedular and there is another called airmiles. I've been using traveltracker for a couple of weeks and it is functional, but I'd like to hear other recommendations.

Haven't used a Palm Pilot, but I noticed that if you book your reservations through BizTravel (one of the advertisers on this website), you can download a record of your reservation directly into it with the click of a button on the site.
Also, Air New Zealand is giving away free Palm IIIs with Business or First Class paid flights. I think the offer is good through 12/15.

I bought the Palm III (with 2MB) just after it entered the swiss market in july-98 (now there is already a 8MB model out). I use it with the Macintosh connection tool.
I did "test" several programs for my mileage checks. I ended doing it myself on an Excel-sheet-like program (Quicksheet = spreadsheet for 3COM connected organizers, from Cutting edge software, 5960 West Parker Road, Suite 278, Plano, Texas 75093, Tf 972-473-8710, www.cesinc.com).
This has the advantage that I can enter all my mileage-related dates at booking time already). What do I enter (example):
oct-16-98, UA 005 JFK-SFO 1445-1746 2'586 basic miles, 2'586 bonus-miles (1K), 5'172 total-miles, 2'586 status-miles, remarks (like claimed from UA on dd/mm/yy) or 5th airline for StarAlliance-promo (fly six earn 50'000 till nov-15).
and the next entry will be:
oct-16/oct-17, Marriott res#, 500 basic miles, 0 bonus, 500 total miles, 14th stay for club marquis renewal, 4 stay for bonus (5 stay=2'500 bonus)
And as any spreadsheet it adds (automatically) etc, etc, etc.

under the palm pilot address book I have (under lastname) also all airport-codes (of my possible destinations) and under the attached notes I list: time diff to GMT, lounge- and 1K-center-locations (and tf#), some restaurants (from Zagat and/or Mobil guide or own experience), best way to go downtown (from my airport transit guide). I enter the dates (having the loud clicks turned off) on my long flights.
In add I have Solitaire-games loaded (also for long flights): from Stand Alone Inc, http://www.powermedia.com

Go Rudi! I have a PalmIII too upgraded from my 2 year old PalmPilot. Could not survive without it. Wonderful features, besdies the basic datebook, addresses, to-do's etc., include:
* Synchs with my Lotus Calendar Software so that my admin assistant automatically gets all of my details, phone numbers, etc.
* AvantGo - download news off the internet from Wall StreeT Journal, CNet and many others and read on the plane.
* Connect to my Lotus Notes mail, download, read mail on the plane, reply, then upload and send when I get home - no big computer to deal with.
* Wine tracking database to track my wine collection (called PbWine www.poohbah.com or [email protected]
* Maps of NY Subway, London tube, etc. using Image View software
* Games - BlockParty (Tetris), Chess, Invaders (of the SPace kind), Patience (i.e. the card game - various kinds), MineHunt (like MineSweeper on Windows), Poker, SubHunt (fun) --> for all those hours on planes.
Highly recommend it.
Rudi, e-mail me if you are interested in any more of the details.

One of the best sites I have found for downloading shareware/freeware/demos is http://www.download.com This carries a wide range of software, neatly categorised, for both PCs & Macs. For Mac users with Palm Pilots the place to go is
http://www.download.com/Mac/FrontDoor/0,1,0-335,00.html?st.dl.allcat.cats.cat335
PC users - I'd suggest starting at http://www.download.com My cookies catapult me into the Mac domain.
Subcategories in the PalmPilot area include applications, business, games, home & personal, interface enhancements, internet and utilities.
This is one of my favorite sites. They often have more than one downloading gateway for a given piece of software, so if one doesn't work you can try another.
And yes, I wish I could write this using HTML so that you could go straight there...

my Palm III works with the MacConnection-Pack 1.X (2MB). I know that the version MacPack 2 should (is?) out in the US - it is not yet available in Switzerland - and I want also "upgrade" to 8MB.
thank you for your tips regarding user software. I will (in the very near future) for sure try out some of your tips.
Actually I am using (beside the standard software that cameoriginally):
- Pimlico DateBk3 (v-2.1k) www.gorilla-haven.org/pimlico
- Memo Plus, Hands High Software, www.HandsHigh.com
- Quicksheet v 3.=, Cutting Edge Software, www.cesinc.com (an MS-Excel-kind of table)
- Solitaire Pack Vol 1, Stand Alone Inc. www.powermedia.com
- ToDo Plus, Hands High Software, www.HandsHigh.com
- Travel Clock V 1.0, Andrew Boswell, www.viamall.com/pilotgear

The new Palm MacPac version 2 is scheduled to be released this fall!
The new Palm MacPac version 2 will feature the Palm Desktop 2.0v2 for Macintosh, an incredibly powerful personal information manager based on the award-winning Claris Organizer product. New HotSync software will also be included, bringing the same flexible conduit support that PC customers enjoy to the MacOS.
With the new Palm MacPac version 2 and appropriate third party software, MacOS customers will finally be able to install third party conduits, then seamlessly synchronize email, expense, and other applications with their Macintosh.
If you'd like to receive an email from us once the new Palm MacPac version 2 is available, register now for our free email service, InSync Online. But wait...there's more! For developers who want to create conduits that will work with the new Palm MacPac version 2 when it's released later this fall, Palm Computing has posted a pre-release version of the Conduit Development Kit (CDK) for Macintosh. This CDK contains all the tools that developers need to create their own conduits to "connect" an application on a PalmPilot or Palm III organizer to a similar application on a Macintosh. The list of Conduit Partners on the right-side of this page have already announced support for the new Palm MacPac version 2.

I know that 3COM is located at the Bay area - I even go "their" stadium (49ers). I thought spring 98 was long ago?
But i guess international companies can always pretend, that they ment "another" spring-time somewhere around the world.

According to http://macweek.zdnet.com/1998/10/19/palm.html
the MacPac 2.0 beta will be available to the public early next month. I usually have a pretty good line on beta software and will give feedback as soon as I get my hands on it.
I still haven't been able to find any travel software better than traveltracker, so I think I'll go ahead and register...
