If you're redeeming for *A F, you're still ahead after fuel surcharges given the drastically lower mileage costs.

For Y, and arguably some J, you would have a good point; but flying those classes you could be much more flexible for carriers where the product does not differ substantially.

Bonus points for CIBC aerogold business credited to aeroplan account 2 days after statement issue. Bonus points are distinction eligible.

Anyone have a Payso referral they'd like to give me?

Edit: got one now, thanks!

Would love to get you one, but current version has a bug on the date of birth field that crashes the app when trying to register. Only (allegedly) works on iphone 5 or 6. For now, it doesn't let you sign up from ipad or other iphones.

Not that Distinction levels are that rewarding, but at least it looks like an added bonus on this one. Hope they keep it that way till August 31st ...

Was just at YYZ terminal 1. Passed by a CIBC booth and they quickly preapproved me for FYF 15000 sign up bonus for the Aerogold Visa Infinite. Perhaps that is only a Pearson Airport specific offer? Rep told me they have a daily quota there, and they push sign-ups hard. 15000 rewarded on first purchase. Also the Aventura was on offer with FYF 15000 points.

Thanks. JerryH also reported the same offer, a few weeks ago.

Curiosity questions, if you don't mind...
Are you an existing CIBC client (bank accounts, CCs, investments)?
If yes, did the rep pull up your CIBC client info, and said you had a pre-approved credit limit offer on your file? Or was this the type of pre-approve where they are still going to pull your credit file for final approval?

Too bad it's only 15,000. Wish they could match the 20,000 FYF offer of their Aero Business VISA promo. Or bring back the promo to $500 spend to get a bonus 10,000 points.

Anyway, I recall that CIBC were pushing their presence in YYZ around Dec 2013, at the ending-edge of when they would be handing over their exclusivity with Aeroplan/AIMIA, onto TD in Jan 2014, and that they were 'sponsoring' the free luggage carts (no more fumbling for a toonie).

They've really made a splash there now, with so many new branches (6?) and ABMs. It makes sense that they are offering this promo to keep their Aeroplan image ongoing, at Canada's busiest airport, even while TD are the main advertisers of an Aero-affiliated VISA credit card.

I think I'll mosey on over to a branch in YYZ when I'm in there on my upcoming trip. Tnx. :D

Yep, got my Aventura Infinite at YYZ too
FYF wasn't automatic but quick call to CIBC, they fixed it easily (as an exception)

I wished I applied for Aeroplan Infinite instead of Aventura though, since I have no use for Aventura and it's no longer transferable. It's almost as bad as Air Miles, ha ha

There were 2 ways to apply at YYZ branch (I was in T1 Domestic, CIBC branch was across from Timmy, down from the Plaza lounge/escalators after security). I was existing CIBC client (just got my Aerogold Business before YYZ)

- You can apply via the computer, supposedly takes longer
- You can apply via paper form if you're short on time. I did, staff wrote down stuff fast, I signed, off I go... only to have a 1-hour departure delay, ha

Yeah, and ignore the Aventura card hawkers. They are really annoying and super aggressive. I think they are like the bloggers but in real life trying to get credit card sign ups. Told them I'm not interested and that I need to top up my AC. I initially stopped by the kiosk only because I thought they could just process an Aerogold Business app for me.

Actually, I was a little bit creeped out by CIBC. Gave the lady my SIN, for some reason she said it wasn't matching (??) then she proceeded to call CIBC HQ or something like that for help. Somehow they pulled up an old profile of me which had an address I was at 5 years ago. I never remember doing any business whatsoever or even applying for any products with CIBC. But maybe I am remembering wrong and I applied for CIBC product years ago.

I had to consent to allow them to check my credit, although I was approved on the spot. I don't know how it affected my credit since I don't have one of those credit check tools.

Very convenient if you have some time to burn before your flight. Before the year is up I'll just switch it with the Tim Hortons no annual fee card and get another $20 sign up bonus.

Have people been converting RBC Avion points to a family member's BA Avios account?

I just attempted it... fingers crossed

Tried it, doesn't work.

Apparently they check in your BA account:
- country needs to be Canada
- name needs to be the same
- birthdate needs to be the same.

Create a family BA Avios account and move them around.

Points will automatically return to your account within 24 hours, at least it did in my case.

Ah ok. I should've posted here first. I hope they return ASAP.

How exactly does the family account work? you can just have them "linked"? I looked into it about a year ago and decided it looked like a hassle back then. Are they any complications?

How often does Amex have point-to-miles conversion promos to BA? Anyone know? In a perfect world it'd be Aero, but that's not happening anymore... :(

Aeroplan t+c's state that unless specifically stated, financial cards sign up bonus miles do not qualify for distinction status.

Smiley90 Jun 18, 2015 4:16 pm

BA doesn't charge fuel surcharges on AA, right? I'm still trying to figure out the best way to get YVR-ZRH.

AA is the obvious no-fuelcharges solution, but there's less points gaining options... BA benefits from the RBC and Amex conversion bonuses, but given how their system is stupid to find non-BA flights, I'm not sure.

Any ideas/feedback? :/

crimsona Jun 18, 2015 4:18 pm

Yes they do (even though AA does not)

It's been a while, I guess follow the online instructions. No complications. Super easy.

As far as I know BA do and don't on AA. They don't for itineraries wholly within the US, they do for any itineraries that have non US legs.

Domestic US and maybe Asia no, but on the JV from US to London, pretty sure yes.

Example:

American Airlines
AA0080
Business

21:55
25 Mar
DFW
12:15
26 Mar
LHR

75000 Avios + $ 591

Smiley90 Jun 18, 2015 5:20 pm

whoa I just realized BA Avios has FINALLY updated their reward cost calculator. IT ACTUALLY WORKS NOW. Instead of giving you a page not found error :lol about time

I just checked and JFK-ZRH is indeed 350 in fuel surcharges with AA when booking with Avios...... dangit. What good is the RBC and Amex-> Avios conversion when i end up paying like 25% of a regular ticket in surcharges.......... AA it is then.

Or look at Air Berlin ... Never searched for that, but allegedly you might get a ticket without YQ with Avios.

Credit Limit

I'm usually quite good at keeping total reported balances below $1K (prepaying a few days before statements are generated), and have no other loan products then 7 credit/charge cards.

What's "acceptable" for churning purposes in terms of total number of credit cards and total amount of credit limit showing on the bureau for >100K income?

How many credit cards can one have on the bureau and still be able to churn?
How much total credit limit can one have on the bureau and still be able to churn?

Anyone get denied for a new MBNA card application? It's because of applying for too many cards via your credit report/score.

Odd thing is I got the Alaska card, my wife got denied. She makes way more than I do, she got the CIBC Aerobiz last week, a basic Amex Aeroplan card 2 months ago and cancelled 2 Amex cards last week (another mistake?).
Oddly her SPG application required proof of income, applied the day before the MBNA app (mistake in timing?)

I got a biz SPG 2 weeks ago, basic Amex 2 months ago and the Alaska card last week. I cancelled the personal Amex gold card 2 months ago.

I'm wondering when can she reapply if at all? This is totally new territory to me.

Something funky about the SPG Amex. Many reports of low initial credit limit, proof of income to get approved, reports of denials due to too many checks. Seems this card is harder to get then the other Amex.

As for MBNA, I would wait for all cards to have at least posted to the bureau twice, ideally 90 days without checks, and she'll be approved no questions asked if she's clean on payments.

Amex offers referral bonuses for referring its cards and getting more people signed up. I'm wondering, can you get such referral bonuses for other cards too? Such as the TD aeroplan or Chase Marriott for example? I mean, bloggers and web sites get something out of it, why would we not if we reference to spouses, family, etc?

AFAIK, no other non-AMEX cards offer any referral incentives. Instead, it's just cashbacks via affiliates sites like RFD/GCR

http://blog.rewardscanada.ca/2015/06...s-capital.html

Biggest news from last week is that Delta SkyMiles® & Capital One® have mutually agreed to end their co-brand relationship. This means the Delta SkyMiles® MasterCards® from Capital One® have been discontinued.

That leaves the following cards as your options to earn SkyMiles in Canada:
American Express Gold Rewards Card (C$1 = .75 - 1.5 SkyMiles)
The Platinum Card from American Express (C$1 = .93 SkyMiles)
Diners Club Club Rewards MasterCard (C$1 = 0.80 SkyMiles)
Marriott Rewards Premier Visa (C$1 = 0.2 - 0.35 SkyMiles)
MBNA Best Western Rewards MasterCard (C$1= 0.30 SkyMiles)
Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express (C$1 = 1 SkyMile)

No word yet on whether Delta is shopping around for another card issuer. This isn't the first time a major U.S. Airline has left our market. A few years back American AAdvantage and TD parted ways. What can we say, our market is tough nut to crack! Outside of Aeroplan, AIR MILES, WestJet and our proprietary credit card programs there isn't a huge market. Sure you have niche markets like British Airways and Cathay Pacific but they don't get much of the pie. I am working on a proposal for a non-North American airline that is interested in launching a card here and all I can say it would be tough to gain market share outside of the niche market of ex-pats who would want to visit friends and family back in the home country. I would be suspect to believe that the Delta cards didn't even have that niche, just loyal SkyMiles® members since Air Canada and WestJet cover a lot of travel to the U.S. and Air Canada/Aeroplan alone have a big chunk of the International market.

Its too bad... @ 2:$1, it was a great way to earn skypesos, which despite the meh value on DL, were useful on partners. 125k for a RT in C to europe on AZ for example (and they did have availability) for 62.5k spend,...

Just noticed this on Amazon.ca, not sure if it has been mentioned before:

http://www.amazon.ca/compare-canada-...ode=3230544011

They offer gc for signing up for various CCs through them. This is good people that I recommend to sign up for the no-fee CIBC div card, for people with no credit who already bank with CIBC its a good way to build credit and keep things simple. Amazon offers a $30 gc

Otherwise none of these offers are worth it imo. But maybe they'll get more aggressive

Re your comment about the DL C.C.
Maybe this is also the reason why we in Canada don't have a Hilton/Hhonors affiliated

I didn’t get denied, but I did have a somewhat interesting experience getting my Alaska MBNA card recently.

Context: My credit score is rated ‘excellent’, I have a reasonably high income and I haven’t had any trouble with credit card apps to date - mostly Amex and TD aeroplan.

I had two existing MBNA accounts that were somewhat dormant - a $0 annual fee platinum plus and a line of credit. I was approved for the Alaska account after a slight delay with a $5k limit. I figured all was good. I then went to regain access to my online account for the platinum plus account and after a couple phone calls found out MBNA had cancelled this account as well as my LOC to make room for the Alaska card. I wasn’t too fussed as they really were dormant accounts but it was still a bit of a shock. No warning, no rationale and no communication, they just went ahead and did it. A bit of a head scratcher to me.

Maybe too much existing credit capacity? Possibly something to do with transitioning to TD? Both accounts were initiated pre-merger.

Could be a similar situation with your wife. Certainly put me at a bit of unease for future apps with MBNA.

Sadly, your experience is not isolated to MBNA. To my knowledge, every financial institution has in its T&C they can reallocate your credit lines and amount as they see fit without prior warning. It is one of the downsides of credit churning which most people are unaware of.

Another FI "trick" is that if you have a 0% card and a 20% card with the same FI they can decide overnight to put everything on the 20% card and close the 0% one without warning you. There are a couple obscure rules on when they can do this, but bottom line, they can and will if it works out for them.

And the worst trick is, if you set up a direct debit, they can self serve as they see fit. Or, if you have savings at the same FI, they can self-serve in these savings as they see fit.

99.99% of the time these do not happen when you pay everything in time. 0.01% of the time it does happen when they get panicked from credit file information they don't like.

Sounds in your case they might not have liked some combinations (credit file vs credit use with them), and decided to give you a sweet (the card you wanted) in order to close the rest (you don't use much) without getting in a fight.

Stay alert.
