I can confirm that (as of this writing) on American Airlines, if you do a status match or challenge on or before June 15, it is only good for the remaining of that calendar year 
.
If, however, you do it June 16th or after it is good for the remaining of that calendar year, AND for the following calendar year. ^ Kinda like "buy one get one half off."

ie if ask for copa match now will I get the whole of next yr as well or should I wait a bit longer?

I think so, but only in business class. Last time I booked a Turkish J roundtrip award using United MileagePlus miles, I was given a BMW transfer at Ataturk from a tight connection, and weeks after the trip I received a letter from Turkish Airlines thanking me for all the revenue and business I was giving them, along with a bottle of Monopole.

Meanwhile I already asked for a status challenge from AA Plat to UA Gold. Just booked a UA ticket to fly at least 12,5K miles. I think this is the best way to get Star Alliance Gold status as soon as possible.
