YourNameHere, could you let me know where you found that stipulation? I'm not doubting your word, it's just that I haven't come across it in the explanations and FAQs. (I had assumed that when buying an airline ticket for $1500 on the Capital One card that Capital One would let you apply your 100,000 miles (equivalent to $1000) on your credit card bill as a credit, leaving your amount owed on the bill to be just the remaining $500.)

There has been a post or two by CapOne cardholders either in this thread or in the big CapOne thread stating that this is how it is done.

It makes sense because I can see in my online CapOne account, in the Rewards Summary section, there is a list of travel charges (so far only one -- a $100 payment on a cruise) made in the past 90 days. It shows that I need 10,000 VM for a credit to offset this charge. There is nothing indicating I have any way to offset only a part of this charge since I have less than 10,000 VM right now.

We don't get to apply our VMs as a general statement credit. We have to have specific travel-related charges to apply the VMs against.

The only way I've seen to get a statement credit for amounts less than specific travel charges is to request a cash award, at a 50% discount of value for travel awards.

Does anybody know if charges to Disney would count?

I am trying to figure out if I can use points to pay my charges to the Walt Disney Travel Company, or Walt Disney World. It would be for tickets and the meal plan, since we are stwaing at a DVC resort. Any ideas, or does anybody see gift cards to Disney as one of the redemption options?

Thanks!

I have a hotel stay coming up that is going to cost just about $1000. If I put the entire cost on my Cap1 card therefore meeting the $1K spend threshold will they credit the $1K? (I have the 100K miles reserved already) In this line of thinking I don't have to do coins or some other method to hit the $1K spend. I guess what I am saying is if the initial $1K in spend, if it is on travel, can be credited as that is the spend that qualifies me for the deal?

Yes, that is what I am planning to do as well. If you go to award redemption (even though you don't have the miles yet), you will see that you need 100 points per dollar of reimbursement. For example: I bought a ticket for $500, it is credited as an airline purchase and I get the option in my account to get credit for it. Therefore, to get statement credit worth $500, I will have to use 50,000 points. Hope that helps make it a little bit clearer.

This will depend on how fast they post the bonus points. The terms state they will come within 2 billing cycles.

The other thread seems to suggest the bonus miles are posting very fast.

And unless you want cold, hard cash, these other rewards are available at the same redemption rate (100 VM per $1) as travel offsets.

Just a thought ... If you haven't paid for the hotel yet, why don't you purchase the $900 Hyatt gift certificate like others have and see if you can use it in the area where you are planning to stay? It could save you some points as the gift certificate are only like ~50,000 points. In my opinion, you can save yourself 50,000 points and put that towards your car rental or airfare.

***EDIT*** nvm, I read that wrong - you haven't hit the 1K reservation limit yet. My bad.

Wife and I got the cards and a total now of 224,000 Capital One miles. Just redeemed for four $900 certificates, $3600 total credit.

Cancelled my four night awards suite reservation at the Park Hyatt Paris Vendome for December and rebooked for cash room with Diamond Suite upgrade. With the certificates, the room will be free for 5 nights at the Senior Rate.

Getting back 132,000 Hyatt points. Also getting 23,000 points for the dollars spent for a cash stay for a total back in my account of 155,000 points.

I'm a very, very happy camper!

do the hyatt gift certs have an expiration date? also are you sure that hyatt location accepts gift certs, if they are similar to the costco ones i know that there were a lot of limitations on the locations that would accept those. i hope for you and the rest of us they are more widely accepted...this does seem like a very wise move. i remember first reading of this option on the view from the wing blog.
