Yes, that is what I am planning to do as well. If you go to award redemption (even though you don't have the miles yet), you will see that you need 100 points per dollar of reimbursement. For example: I bought a ticket for $500, it is credited as an airline purchase and I get the option in my account to get credit for it. Therefore, to get statement credit worth $500, I will have to use 50,000 points. Hope that helps make it a little bit clearer.
