Personally, I hate points.com. I tried it several times, and it was a lot of effort. I got a few good, small buys here and there.
My biggest issue isn't the fact that one pays through the nose. My biggest issue is that my credit cards, for whatever reason, keep getting "declined."
I can assure them that there is nothing wrong with my credit cards. It is points.com that is the problem. It is on their end.
I wrote to points.com and explained that now I've been through several credit cards, and they just will not work on the website anymore (all declined). I have none left to use. I received a canned reply and then several days later a lame reply asking for the type of miles I was trying to purchase. However the email did not let me reply, so I had to go back to the stinkin' web form and reply that way. Finally I got another answer that I don't quite know if it is true or not. They said that the airline actually makes the decision as to whether or not the sale takes place, and points.com is just a "platform" or something like that, for the airline to use.
????????????????
What the (@&%(@%)!??
So I will not use points.com anymore because I am UNABLE to do so, and they don't really care, and I'm out of virgin credit cards that have not been used on their website. So I'm done but not by choice. And I agree with those that said points.com is a hassle. In my opinion it is, and in more ways than one.
If someone came out with a better website similar to points.com (but better and fairer) I suppose it would do rather well. Anyone? Anyone?

American Express considering competing with points.com?
American Express Serve is apparently running a survey where they ask, among other things, about the appeal of the following potential new service:
Later, the survey asks if the respondent is a user of about six different web sites, one of which is points.com.
"A tab on Serve.com where you can store and track your loyalty points, miles and rewards from from any loyalty program and exchange them with others through Serve transactions"

Then again, I have heard that some people are saying points.com is even finding ways to re-neg on those transactions too!
They are a rip off but for just 10 miles it was worth doing what I did.

BTW, this is not at all an endorsement for Points.com - which I find to be an appalling site both in service and value.

I took the survey, but I highly doubt Amex would have the partnerships Points.com does, considering it doesn't even have working relationships/partnerships with 3 of the major (US) airlines.

So glad you said that, I was beginning to think it was just me. I don't even remember when or why I signed up for points.com, but fortunately I only have 2 of my many accts listed and don't plan on listing more. and I'm tired of resetting my password, which like you, I can't possibly be forgetting EVERY time!!

It means that the exchange is not allowed for some reason (not enough balance, programs does not allow exchange etc.)
