Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

My flights was on the first week of May, and there is no sign of crediting the millage to Alaska. I will wait for few more week and then will submit the the credit request.

We have only done one side of this ticket. I tried to go in and change the airline affiliation number but couldn't remember how and decided to deal with it later, maybe even at the counter. I frankly don't need those miles for such a short leg but it was in business, so I guess it is worth something. Receiving so many alaska miles for the first class leg was tremendous. As a datapoint, cathay never responded to any emails if they felt they had fixed the problem, the miles would just show up.

I waited about a month because somewhere on their site I read that it could take 4-8 weeks. I finally went through the Cathay website to get the information needed to send in the boarding passes and ticket information. Within a couple of days the CX miles were in the alaska account, but the cathay dragon we took from Han-hkg did not post. I waited a few more days and finally resent that portion. This time I received a note from Cathay that dragon did not have a relationship with alaska and some other instructions for contacting companies to have them credited somewhere else. I gave up.

I waited about a month because somewhere on their site I read that it could take 4-8 weeks. I finally went through the Cathay website to get the information needed to send in the boarding passes and ticket information. Within a couple of days the CX miles were in the alaska account, but the cathay dragon we took from Han-hkg did not post. I waited a few more days and finally resent that portion. This time I received a note from Cathay that dragon did not have a relationship with alaska and some other instructions for contacting companies to have them credited somewhere else. I gave up.
We have only done one side of this ticket. I tried to go in and change the airline affiliation number but couldn't remember how and decided to deal with it later, maybe even at the counter. I frankly don't need those miles for such a short leg but it was in business, so I guess it is worth something. Receiving so many alaska miles for the first class leg was tremendous. As a datapoint, cathay never responded to any emails if they felt they had fixed the problem, the miles would just show up.

The operating airline usually can't speed up the crediting of miles individually so emailing them about this is futile.

the reality of F (or even J) on CX looks grim. Our plan is
1) CX F
2) JL F
3) CX J
4) JL J
our flexibility for the return is to leave on a Tuesday but will our time away from work until the following Monday so if it turns out we need to take a few extra days that’s fine or even fly to ORD, BOS, WAS would all be fine too and then can get back from those cities. Surely there’s bound to be availability on at least one flight for two within a 5 day window to a variety of cities aye?

I wouldn't be so sure of that and I recently read (I believe on OMAAT) that Alaska has restrictions for booking flights from Asia, as in you can't book flights within a 3 days window due to fraud prevention. If I were you I'd get my flights taken care of in advance. The likelihood that the AS miles for your return flight will be credited in time and that you find at least two seats in First is pretty much zero. YMMV
We we looked at getting tickets now and trying to upgrade to F if the miles post in time and there would be a $125 reticent fee for each of us even if it’s an upgrade. Therefore we decided to take the risk. Does anybody think there’s fallacy in the plan?

The amount of miles one can collect on Alaska is absolutely insane, basically another one way in First Class on the house.
This fare was really worth it's weight in gold. Too bad I didn't book more but let's not get greedy.

Just a quick information for people with short-checking issues / problems: I have been able to postpone the HKG-HAN segment before flying the first leg for 4 days (so I am basically having a 4 day stopover in HKG) which gives me the opportunitty to directly add other CX Bookings after I will be arriving from YVR to HKG without worrying about any cancellations etc. Change fee was 100 USD and fare difference USD 15 (??). Paid 115 USD in total.
