CAUTION - TURNAROUND
"One customer did have issues. Wang Guanran, who documents his travels on hktravelblog.com, had his plans to travel to New York on Wednesday cut short when he was prevented from flying by immigration officials in Vietnam... he was detained by Vietnamese immigration officials, who said it was illegal to return to his city of origin while in transit." - Source:SCMP, 2 January 2019

Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.

Seat Assignments

per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and theyíll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if youíre solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and Iíll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Basic Visa Options for US Citizens
1. One month, one entry
2. One month, multiple entries
3. Three months, one entry
4. Three months, multiple entries
5. One year, multiple entries

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.

Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Not only on this particular ticket ex VN but also regular ones.
I waited about a month because somewhere on their site I read that it could take 4-8 weeks. I finally went through the Cathay website to get the information needed to send in the boarding passes and ticket information. Within a couple of days the CX miles were in the alaska account, but the cathay dragon we took from Han-hkg did not post. I waited a few more days and finally resent that portion. This time I received a note from Cathay that dragon did not have a relationship with alaska and some other instructions for contacting companies to have them credited somewhere else. I gave up.

We have only done one side of this ticket. I tried to go in and change the airline affiliation number but couldn't remember how and decided to deal with it later, maybe even at the counter. I frankly don't need those miles for such a short leg but it was in business, so I guess it is worth something. Receiving so many alaska miles for the first class leg was tremendous. As a datapoint, cathay never responded to any emails if they felt they had fixed the problem, the miles would just show up.

On the Cathay site you are given an option to add your FF number to each segment of the flights. We used AS for the long haul and AA for the cathay dragon segment and both posted within a week or so of flying. Save your boarding pass and ticket number if they don't post and there are forms to download and email in to get the credit if it doesn't post. I don't believe that Cathay is the one to post, it should be the other FF program that does it (so that would explain why they didn't respond).
Hope this helps you.

Cathay Dragon flights aren't eligible for AS miles.

Cathay Dragon flights won't post to Alaska, I credited those to BAEC.

The operating airline usually can't speed up the crediting of miles individually so emailing them about this is futile.

our flexibility for the return is to leave on a Tuesday but will our time away from work until the following Monday so if it turns out we need to take a few extra days thatís fine or even fly to ORD, BOS, WAS would all be fine too and then can get back from those cities. Surely thereís bound to be availability on at least one flight for two within a 5 day window to a variety of cities aye?
I wouldn't be so sure of that and I recently read (I believe on OMAAT) that Alaska has restrictions for booking flights from Asia, as in you can't book flights within a 3 days window due to fraud prevention. If I were you I'd get my flights taken care of in advance. The likelihood that the AS miles for your return flight will be credited in time and that you find at least two seats in First is pretty much zero. YMMV

If I understand correctly the flights within 3 days limitation and Asia is inter-Asia flights. When doing a search to the US on the Alaska app plenty of flights show up for today and tomorrow.

We we looked at getting tickets now and trying to upgrade to F if the miles post in time and there would be a $125 reticent fee for each of us even if itís an upgrade. Therefore we decided to take the risk. Does anybody think thereís fallacy in the plan?

FT user sgxxxxxx hosted me to a CX F lounge, thanks to his great gesture. I am just a low life OWS this year and Wing Business got my grannies and I got in with his F lounge.

I simply love this community and this error fare!

By the way, whosoever is PEK in the next two hours I can host four in CA lounge, details posted in AA lounge meet-up threat already.

Funny enough I checked again a moment ago and it just posted:

AS Credit

The amount of miles one can collect on Alaska is absolutely insane, basically another one way in First Class on the house.

This fare was really worth it's weight in gold. Too bad I didn't book more but let's not get greedy.

63k miles credit on Alaska... Love this

Miles credited in a week.

70k miles for a first class trip, one way to Asia.

This has to be the best deal ever. I am so glad i bought the First class ticket for $200 more.

On May 10th I completed my J return YVR-HKG-HAN and the first leg credited to Alaska within 5 days, the second credited QF in around 10 days. Still have a JFK F return in October.

Just a quick information for people with short-checking issues / problems: I have been able to postpone the HKG-HAN segment before flying the first leg for 4 days (so I am basically having a 4 day stopover in HKG) which gives me the opportunitty to directly add other CX Bookings after I will be arriving from YVR to HKG without worrying about any cancellations etc. Change fee was 100 USD and fare difference USD 15 (??). Paid 115 USD in total.

Last time I went to Vietnam they only had VOA, is the Evisa much easier? I kind of like the visa in my passport (yes, I am one of those), if you do the e-visa do you still at least get a passport stamp?
