Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Appreciate your experiences. To set expectations for others not familiar with HKG... for a 55 minute connection - which is comfortably over MCT - I wouldn't expect any sort of meet and greet.

After several calls, I managed to change my YVR-HKG-HAN to JFK-HKG-HAN for additional $200 in fare difference + $100 change fee per person.
The agents might say you can't change cities at first, but you just gotta push them to try doing it.

We're actually headed to Chiang Mai right now. Instead of skipping the leg to HAN and booking a direct flight we booked a cheap ticket from HAN-CNX on Bangkok Air.

Thanks. I was thinking about skipping the HKG-HAN leg and spending a few days in HK, but even that plan has some issues lately. And buying a cheap ticket for HKG-CNX or even dumping my Cathay miles for that leg. we did HAN on the first side of the ticket and loved it, but now would rather see more of HK. So if Cathay would let me layover a couple of days, then that would be a win, and if they would let me change the leg to skip HAN and go to CNX, that would be a win win.
Apparently I have to get a Vietnam visa either way since they probably won't let me board in YVR without one.
It is just so complicated to extract value out of a $1000 first class ticket. HA.

If you can get yourself onto the early morning HKG-HAN flight, you can no-show for it and take a flight to your intended destination on CX later in the day since you won't have any overlapping bookings.

I also tried building in a HKG stopover, but of course they wanted like 20k + $100 for the change.

Thank you. I didn't really understand about getting myself onto the early morning flight. I understand that there is one but of course I am on the flight that is 11 hours later. I don't understand why I can't no-show for that one just as easily as paying to change to the earlier flight and then no show. My thinking was to go to the wing on arrival and get a shower and some breakfast, then have them take me to immigration and make my own layover in hk. I had them take me to immigration during the long layover on the first leg and we ran into the city for a bit and it was a lot of fun.
I am totally open to your thoughts or ideas and really appreciate your effort and time. I hate to just no show, but don't care to pay a cancellation charge just to abandon a business class let to HAN.

FYI: When i arrived in HKG on my return trip I went back to departure hall and asked them to cancel my check-in (but not the ticket).
They didn't want to initially do it but after i mentioned i might want to change my ticket later they agreed (took 2-3 min total) and i was 'checked out' for my HKG-HAN portion.
Guessing this will help deal with the no-show situation/guilt ;-)

Just back from return portion of JFK-HKG-DAD. Decided to skip HKG-DAD and do same-day turn back to US via AA HKG-DFW-LGA. Spent a blissful couple hours in The Pier then lounge hopped to Wing, Bridge, Deck. Went to Amex lounge (decent food but cheap seating, cramped restrooms and overcrowded so would not recommend). Also tried out massive QF lounge which I would not recommend due to its inconvenient location and limited food options. oh and yes I did use a real visa to check in at JFK

Just got a sked change notice that my Nov 8th HKG-DAD flight has been cancelled (8a) and the new (and only) flight that day is at 6:10p. As I had already booked an afternoon revenue DAD-SGN-SIN flight with Vietnam Air on the 8th and must be in Singapore by midday on the 9th at the latest, not sure what to do. Might be able to change the DAD-SGN-SIN to the 9th with penalty fees. Could get CX to change me to SGN on the 8th and book something on the 9th to SIN using the residual value of the Vietnam Air ticket. Unlikely that I can ask CX to put me on one of their HKG-SIN flights on the afternoon of the 8th? Or I can just ditch the HKG-DAD and buy a HKG-SIN ticket with cash or an award.
Any suggestions? Other options? (I have looked at changing the JFK-HKG F sector ahead by a day but will miss connect on HGK-DAD and only have the same flight on the 8th.)
