Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

February 23 J flights just pushed to Jul 6. Tickets originally to HAN, CX to HAN flights were canceled and I agreed to and was holding SGN. They noted in my most recently communication that they are restarting HAN and I could move back to that if I wanted, but I actually preferred SGN so lets see if July sticks...

They noted in my most recently communication that they are restarting HAN and I could move back to that if I wanted, but I actually preferred SGN so lets see if July sticks...
Assuming it operates, and I can transit HKG and enter Vietnam, I plan to fly it that day in business rather than drag this out further hoping CX stays in business and first class comes back.

Think it's becoming quite clear that if you want to fly F on this fare (or possibly fly at all given the chances of transiting HKG), you'll need to get CX to rebook you on a different carrier. DPs to that end would be helpful. Would seem reasonable enough to ask for JL.

Think it's becoming quite clear that if you want to fly F on this fare (or possibly fly at all given the chances of transiting HKG), you'll need to get CX to rebook you on a different carrier. DPs to that end would be helpful. Would seem reasonable enough to ask for JL.

But keep in mind this was a heavily discounted mistake fare that CX generously agreed to honor.

10.2.1 We will take all necessary measures to avoid delay in carrying you and your Baggage. In the exercise of these measures and in order to prevent a flight cancellation, in exceptional circumstances, we may arrange for a flight to be operated on our behalf by an alternative carrier and/or aircraft.

So it seems pretty clear - they can put us on another carrier, but they are not obligated to do so. Then it goes on to your (our) options:
10.2.2 Except as otherwise provided by the Warsaw Convention or the Montreal Convention or applicable law, if we cancel a flight, fail to operate a flight reasonably according to the schedule, fail to stop at your destination or Stopover destination, or cause you to miss a connecting flight on which you hold a confirmed reservation, we shall, at your option, either:
10.2.2.1 carry you at the earliest opportunity on another of our scheduled services on which space is available without additional charges and; where necessary, extend the validity of your Ticket; or
10.2.2.2 within a reasonable period of time re-route you to the destination shown on your Ticket by our own services or those of another Carrier, or by other mutually agreed means and class of transportation without additional charge. If the fare, and charges for the revised routing are lower than what you have paid, we shall refund the difference;
10.2.2.3 or make a refund in accordance with the provisions of Article 11;
The red part is interesting, but I am not sure that is an obligation.

I think it's tough for CX to make a case that they're going to extend the validity of a F ticket if they have no F service on that route through end of schedule.

I will need to start calling CX this week to change my canceled First ticket.
1. Anyone have luck with getting CX to switch you to First with another carrier?
2. Anyone able to push to later this year with First? (None showing, but maybe CX is still showing internally?)

Second, note that the reference to "another Carrier" specifically references that is must be "mutually" agreed.

My situation - Flight canceled in mid-Feb

Not very helpful. Clearly not a decision maker. She refused to budge beyond the third week in March when the first FC was available.
No partners or other carriers were allowed. Given that the flight shows up no where online as a FC flight, I figured I would accept it and kick the can down the road.
It is waitlisted and will take up to 48 hours to confirm. So maybe it confirms maybe it doesn't.

I think it is a phantom flight. It is nowhere online or at the CX site. It is similar to a flight I have in April with CX... still showing on time and confirmed in First, but you cannot find it with a search.
And to be clear, CX has not confirmed the March flight yet.
