Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

With how things are presently going in S.E. Asia, and the lack of a coordinated vaccination plan, it is going to be a while before they allow ordinary tourists in.
Thailand is shooting for the third quarter, but they are not even receiving any vaccine until May, and that is woefully not enough.
I would love to be wrong, but I am not seeing a return to normal in S.E. Asia until early 2022.

The situation:
Assuming:
I think there is a high chance it will be canceled. But in case it is not, what to do?
Some initial (crazy) thoughts of mine:
Besides Vietnam and Thailand, has anyone gotten CX to reroute to another country?
Obviously, I am rooting for cancel or another country to open up that CX would fly me to, like the Philippines or Indonesia, but if that does not happen, looking for the wisdom/experience of this group to have some ideas on what to do with the ticket. A refund of hundreds of dollars for the remainder of a first-class ticket is obviously not desirable.
Thanks for any thoughts on this.

The HKG rules (AFAIK) still say you must have a single ticket through HKG, but, I am wondering if I just do my airside connection like I am going to BKK, but have a different ticket, HKG-XXX and pick up that ticket at the transfer desk (if open) or the gate, would that work?
- Do the paperwork for quarantine in Thailand to clear immigration, then change my mind and choose to depart right away to another country. (Not even sure if this is possible.)
- I would be happy to work with CX to do this as legit as possible - maybe 'marry' the segment out of HKG with a separate ticket I buy/use miles for so it is all above board, but doubt they are interested in that.
Besides Vietnam and Thailand, has anyone gotten CX to reroute to another country?
Obviously, I am rooting for cancel or another country to open up that CX would fly me to, like the Philippines or Indonesia, but if that does not happen, looking for the wisdom/experience of this group to have some ideas on what to do with the ticket. A refund of hundreds of dollars for the remainder of a first-class ticket is obviously not desirable.
Thanks for any thoughts on this.

1. thailand does not allow airside transit (until at least 28 feb), much less so on separate tickets
2. ditto
3. there is no transit, everyone has to clear immigration and go quarantine
4. CGK might be an option (evisa+5day quarantine) but i doubt CX will let you change without refare
I see CX is currently only operating SGN, no HAN or DANANG so it might get cancelled

"Are U.S. citizens permitted to enter? Yes, but only with a valid residence permit (KITAS or KITAPA) At the current time, the Indonesian government has prohibited foreign visitors from transiting and traveling to Indonesian Territory unless they are in possession of a valid residence permit. Visa-free and visa-on-arrival entry for all foreign travelers, including U.S. citizens, remains suspended."
Other places talk about a 5-day quarantine (CGK) and no quarantine (DPS) with testing.
It does leave open the question, assuming they let me on the plane in JFK, could I pick up a (new) separate ticket at the lounge or gate in HKG airside. (They seem to be selling them.)

Thanks. Perfectly logical they will not let you board without it. Do you think USA agents will be aware of it when flying JFK-HKG-BKK?

It's part of timatic, so i would say yes. You need to get Certificate of Entry (COE) from thai embassy. to get that you need nonrefundable quarantine hotel etc
