Does anyone know if you do online checkin and are departing LAX if you can just walk through the TBIT connector and go to the gate to get your boarding pass as opposed to going outside and to the HKG check in counter and then back through security?

Just signed up for the gold status challenge today and they confirmed it. So it’s open for 2019 now as well.

Probably nothing to worry about, but something to keep an eye on for those booked in the future. Flying HX in Feb myself.
As a thinking exercise (as I repeat, I don't think it's anything to worry about), what could one expect if HX were to go under/cancel LAX or SFO? A fight to refund the tickets, no refunds, accommodation on another airline (such as Hainan)?
I'll be flying Jan 19, returning 26th.

Jan 20th is the maturity date they need to pay the 2000% yield bound.

Normally I'm not nervous, but in my scenario I could be potentially stuck in China if HX stops operating after 20th, which would be worse than occuring before my trip. I'm now considering buying a one-way MU PVG-LAX ticket for 26th, which can be refunded for $117 (I'd consider this as insurance fee) as the cost of me getting stuck in China will be astronomical.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out. My outbound is Feb 14, so hopefully, they stick around as them going under (or greatly reducing schedules and/or destinations) would be quite an issue for me.

Great, looks like I'll be right in the middle of my trip, guess its time to look for backup options if necessary.

It's making me nervous reading some of the recent news about the company but it is really likely that they would just abruptly fold and cancel all flights?

It has happened before and will happen again. HX folding suddenly would be a pretty big one though. I have a feeling the Chinese govt would prop up the company, at least in the short term (if they aren't already), if it was that close to collapse.

Maybe time to pick up some travel insurance to ensure you can get a refund if they fail.

Do OTAs have any responsibility to make you whole in this situation?

I don't even mind if they abruptly fold before my journey begins, I can still cancel all hotel booking and keep my PTO.

The worst scenario is abruptly folding while my trip is in progress. Even fully prepared it will still cost me a huge chunk of money (last minute 1-way booking), I'll watch how things evolve over the next 10 days.

I'm in the same boat (1/19-1/26) and already looking at 1-way PVG-LAX flight, the most comfortable option seems to be KE PVG-ICN-LAX in Y for under $1000, yes it's economy but east bound and Y seats are more comfortable (for gods sake don't fly MU in the cramped 3-4-3 777) . If HX is still flying it's refundable for 1300 CNY. So I'd consider this insurance fee.

Charge back, Goods not delivered. Let the banks deal with it.

Anyone know how financial default travel insurance works and if its worth purchasing?

The money part is easy. I was really hoping they'd have some legal obligation to find an alternate flight. Sounds like they don't.

Seems most insurance companies don't cover it.

I booked mine on my Sapphire Pref card. Just looked through the terms and it seems financial insolvency is covered. I wouldn't be too worried if you booked with a standard US credit card (Visa, Amex, etc).
