I'm ready to board return flight at PVG, for anyone thinking self connecting overnight is safe, think again

https://www.flightstats.com/v2/flight-tracker/FM/9222?year=2019&month=1&date=25&flightId=987767801

There was a complete lockdown at URC airport so it could not get to LHW ( deep snow and fog), it was quite possible that the flight would've been cancelled today and we'd have to overnight in Lanzhou but I got lucky and was offered another MU flight departing this evening. Endless to say, stress level was astronomical.

I would recommend connecting to a long haul flight with not only enough time, but also enough options should your flight gets cancelled, someone at trip advisors once mentioned at least 3 alternative flights later that you'd still make the connection, which was indeed my case.

Just completed my last flight of this fare HKG-SFO. On my out bound, I was in 15 H ( booked 16K, moved due to inoperable IFE).
On the return, I was in 18A. I have to say there is a huge difference in sleeping space between the A and K seats, which are wonderful with
lots of leg/foot space, and the B and H seats, which are much more constricted. If you are a solo traveller, get an A or K.

No comments as to which pairs are better on the centre seats for couples.

I have got my outbound coming up in a week and was just wondering what peoples opinions are on the lounge in HKG? Worth checking out or better just go straight to the new Centurion?

Also what are peoples experience with their status challenge and amex plat? It says I need to email -- has anybody been able to do it via the chat? Or if via email how long did it take to get a response?

My response for the challenge took 1 or 2 days. I did it via email

People have reported that the HKAir lounge is pretty nice. I've been to the Centurion - it's fine, but small and nothing special. It kinda overlooks the much better CX lounges, so maybe I'm just sad when I'm there that I'm not flying CX.

It’s smaller but excellent food spread at HX lounge. Would go back anytime. Can’t comment on Centurian.

The HX lounge has a pretty big buffet with a few items even made to order. There is plenty of comfortable seating, with a variety of set ups (lounge chairs, dining tables, work stations, etc.)

Where the Centurion Lounge excels is with their bar... great cocktails and real champagne. It’s a relatively small lounge with not a lot of comfortable seating.

I ate at the HX lounge and drank at Centurion.

So there are two lounges for Hong Kong Air.

Bauhinia Club is near the main entrance to the airport at gate 21, down a level. This is a very small lounge - not impressive at all, frankly.

Then, Club Autus is in the 200s area. Much larger, more food, many, many more seats, loungers for napping, etc.

If you have time in HKG, go to Club Autus, no question.

I second the choice of Autus, in fact, if you value comfort, space, and privacy, its no brainer.

I'm way past the novelty of lounge food, I prefer things at common area if you really want some good food.

So what do you recommend for food inside security? I agree that I'm happy to pay for good food, but I couldn't really find much. We went to the Cantonese roast meat place, and it was fine, but nothing special. Maxim's and Crystal Jade are before security.

There you get many options and it really depends on what you like. I personally like the roast duck/goose plate (right after security next to McDonald's) but it's a little more expensive (but worth it), some may also like certain noodle soups, although this is a bit OT.

As a data point for everyone, I just successfully signed up for the HX status challenge for this year, even though I hold no status with any airline, through having a Chase Sapphire Reserve card (HX sees it as the equivalent of Platinum). The specific wording I used was that it was a Visa Infinite card - I did have to send scans of both sides, because they wanted to see the expiration date. I plan to use the resulting miles to book Alaska Airlines flights in the future.

I'm going to post this one more time as my flight is on Saturday. Has anyone checked in online and just gone to the gate for their boarding pass? I guess I will be the Guinea pig...
