The more I think about this, the more I want to do this.
But the dates aren't good--I want to go in late December. I'll think about it overnight and hope it will be there in the morning. If not, there will be other opportunities to visit the Kingdom...

I'd be VERY interested in visiting RUH (and JED), but for Saudi transit visa purposes, doesn't that mean 18 hours or less? Also, do we get to keep our passports while transiting? I'd really just like to go to the observation deck of the Riyadh Kingdom Centre (Tower) and eat a Saudi meal. Whether Saudi meal means American fast food or balut these days I'm not sure, but...

Also from JFK - 556 ai.
I see dates departing on Nov 23 and returning by the Nov 29... I did a multi city search on Orbitz and left JFK on the 23rd. left RUH on the 25th (24 hr layover) and then left DXB on the 28th and Jed on the 29th.(~8 hour layover but at night... $556 ai

This does absolutely nothing to ensure that you will receive credit. Given that DL doesn't even list it on their website, that's similar to suggesting you show up to a DL flight with your AA FF number and expect credit upon checkin.

US citizen transiting through Saudi Arabia (SA)
TWOV (Transit Without Visa):
Visa required, except for Visa not required for those
continuing to a third country, provided:
continuing by the same or first connecting aircraft within
18 hours; and
holding confirmed onward tickets; and
all documents required for their the next destination.
Only one stop-over in Saudi Arabia is permitted, except when
flying on Saudi Arabian Airlines, where a second transit point
is permitted. Any change to itinerary is subject to
immigration approval. There are no hotel facilities available
at the airport transit area.
Passengers whose connection time is over 6 hours and less
than 18 hours may be allowed to leave the airport for hotel
accommodation or shopping. If passengers are granted
permision to leave the airport, immigration will retain
their passports and issue a transit permit which must be
submitted to immigration 3 hours prior to departure. One
coloured passport photograph is required.

Admission and transit refused if not complying with the
Saudi Arabian requirements regarding general appearance
