PS Welcome to FT ticu!

Not only is this the quickest way, it's essentially the only way.

If you inbound flight is on time, you should have no trouble making the connection. Keep in mind you'll have to re-clear security in T5, as there is no way to make an "airside" transfer.

Thanks guys!
Is it easy to catch the ATS from T1 or should I know my homework to get to it easier? Thanks again...

It's pretty easy. Watch for the signs after you leave security, you'll take an indoor escalator up and then walk over the lanes of traffic, and get on the train.

From what I remember, it's pretty well marked.

Yes, follow the signs to the escallor/elevators to the ATS from the ticketing level. I seem to recall they closed the exit from the B concourse to ticketing, but I am not certain as I don't usually go that way. You'll cross over the roadway via a skybridge and take the escallators down to the ATS station which is opposite from T1. In the worst case, the whole operation from deplanning at a High or Low C gate, walking, waiting, riding the ATS, and arriving at T5 should not exceede 25 minutes.

ATS trains come every 4-5 minutes.

Is this YUL->MCI->ORD too tight a cnxn at ORD?

First, I am an international travel and ORD virgin--
I am going to YUL soon and I was just thinking about on the way back I am going YUL-ORD-MCI. The flight arrives at ORD at 8:52am on a Saturday and the connector to MCI leaves at 9:42am. Is that going to be enough time to clear customs, collect and recheck bags, pass through security and make it on the flight? (IF the flight is on time) What are the chances that my checked bags make it to MCI with me? If they don't does the airline deliver them to my house later?

The whole thing was booked on united.com. YUL-ORD is a UAL flight operated by Air Canada Jazz of course. Worse comes to worse they just put me on the next flight in a couple of hours right?

Should I expect any compensation for a missed flight like that if it is not my fault and all booked thru the same airline?

Using Google-fu, it appears you'll actually clear US Customs/Immigration in Canada. So that is one less worry.

Air Canada uses Terminal 2, United uses Terminal 1. IIRC you can walk between the two without going through security again, but if you arrive at the far end of one terminal and have to get to the opposite far end of the other, you may actually save time by taking the train and going through security anyway. 50 minutes is sufficient on most days, but you're flying on a holiday weekend so your mileage may vary.

Your bag will even (probably) make it, but as with any flight having a change of skivies and anything you'd need to last 24 hours is always practical. Even more so when traveling in winter when long flight delays are commonplace. If you can avoid checking a bag, by all means do so and avoid the issue all together...it makes it much easier for the airlines to rebook you when things go wonky.

If your YUL-ORD flight is delayed and you miss your ORD-MCI flight, your 'compensation' will be getting you on the next available UA flight with an open seat. If this happens after you've arrived at ORD, go to the rebooking kiosks and follow the instructions. If you experience a long enough delay on the YUL side to know you'll undoubtedly miss your connection, then politely approach the desk and explain the situation so they can rebook your ORD-MCI leg in advance.

Relax and have a nice trip!

AC uses the first couple of gates in Terminal 2, while UA is in Terminal 1. It's a 3-5 minute walk between terminals. Absolutely no reason to leave security - if you leave security you will most likely misconnect. Just walk over Terminal 1 (or take the Shuttle bus between Terminal 2 and Concourse C if you're UA flight leaves from C) - if everything's on time, you're good to go.

Adding to this, there are UA monitors near the AC gates to check if your MCI flight is out of B (just walk, do not leave airside) or C (take the shuttle bus by gate E2A).

There are no customs in ORD as you will clear them in Canada. An hour is more than enough time in ORD as long as the flights land on time and does not go to the penalty box for a time out.

.

So coming back from YUL to ORD you are saying that I will actually clear customs in Canada? That seems odd to me. I would think they would fly into terminal 5 at ORD and do customs there right?

Yep, you clear American customs and immigration at the Canadian origin airport right after you check in. So make sure and allow enough time on the departure end to wait in the Customs line there--could be 10 minutes, could be an hour.

After you do that, you drop your bags for screening and continue on to regular TSA-style screening (albeit with the Canadian equivalent) and the gates.

When I flew from Toronto in October, it appeared that all the US-bound gates were separated from all the rest of the Canada domestic gates.
