2 hours enough for T1->T5 in ORD?

O ORD experts!

I'm looking at an itin that has us arriving into ORD on UA 830 at 5.17pm in Terminal 1, and connecting to LX 009 departing 7.15pm from Terminal 5.

Some more info:
a. Travel date is Saturday 04/04/09
b. I will be travelling with Mrs. colourmix, and colourmix Jr. who is 18mos old and in an umbrella stroller and we will have associated carry-on bags
c. Both Mrs. colourmix and I are 2Ps [ need to fix the FT signature which still says 1K :-) ]

My questions are:
1. Do we need to re-clear security in T5 or is there an airside connection
2. If so, is there a premier line for lowly 2Ps
3. Is this a feasible connection, given that arrival is probably during the evening rush hour

Thanks in advance!

1. You have to take the train to T5 and re-clear security
2. Not sure if there is a priority security lane in T5. UA does not operate departing flights out of there so if there is one it will have to allow *Silver access (not all do). If you are in business or first class you will have access to a priority security lane if there is one.
3. Yes 2 hours is plenty of time even with a baby.

2 Hours should be plenty of time

Thanks! We are flying economy - forgot to add that.

Additional question - in case the inbound flight is late and we can't make the connection, are we seriously hosed? Will LX throw their hands up and say it's UA's fault? [ I would if I were in their position :-) ]

Ticket is going to be issued by a travel agent and not bought thru UA or LX site - I assume that if I bought it through the airline website, I have a recourse saying "you sold me the ticket, now fix things for us". But if I buy through a TA, can I still say that?

There is no F or C or priority line in ORD T5, just one line for everyone.

2 hours may not be enough with a baby. Late afternoon/early evening arrivals into ORD always congested with lots of traffic, most of the time with 30 min delay. Consider UA 830 is a 767, it will certainly arrive at the C gate. The track from C gate all the way through the underground tunnel, out of the security, to the train will definately take close to 30 min with a baby.

The security line at T5 is very long at late afternoon, as there are so many europe flights depart around that time. OP is connecting to LX, UA may not be able to print out the LX boarding pass, OP may need to obtain the boarding pass in ORD checkin.

I am pretty sure UA can print the LX boarding pass for them...they were able to for my disastrous attempt to fly LX through ORD last week.

Don't know about it, but I can say UA is not printing out basically any *A boarding pass the past few times even it is codeshare. RCC agent can't help either. On the other hand, other *A members are able to print out UA boarding pass, but when you get to the gate, UA would still ask you to change it back to a UA format boarding pass.

I did this connection with my girlfriend (fiancee by the end of the trip ;)) in December 2007...

Came in from DCA with roughly two hours, made it over to T5 on the train, recleared security - it was actually pretty busy, and had enough time to enjoy the BMI lounge before departure on LX.

Should be fairly easy, just don't dawdle around T1/2, and instead head immediately for the train to T5 - the BMI lounge is nice - better than any RCCs at ORD, albeit a bit small.

To my understanding, the critical questions are "Is this a legal connection" and "Is this on a single ticket." If the answer to both is "yes" - and a 2 hour connection at ORD is indeed legal - the airline who hosed you needs to take care of the problem. If the UA flight is late they need to rebook you. This exact thing happend to be at LHR when BMI got me there from AMS too late to make my connection to ORD. They put me up overnight and rebooked me for the next day.

If you are on two tickets you have no recourse.

Transfer time in ORD

Did a search and came up empty. I'm transferring next Monday mid-day through ORD, in C with just carry-on, from SFO to LHR, both arriving and departing in T1. I assume that 1 hour and 10 minutes is easily enough time, but haven't gone through ORD for an international connection in quite a while so wanted to ask. I don't have to go through security there again in getting on the international flight, do I?

Nelumbo Feb 27, 2009 4:39 pm

You are right: you don't go through security again at ORD.
1 hour and 10 minutes should be enough for you to even get a drink at RCC and board,
if there's no ATC and weather is not a problem.

mpw81 Feb 27, 2009 4:40 pm

As long as your flight is on time you are going to have more time than you know know what to do with. As a *G hit up the RCC, you should get drink chits. No need to re-clear security. Taking the B-C under ground walkway is the worst you will have to do.

ctkw Feb 27, 2009 4:40 pm

If your flight is on time arrival, you will have plenty of time even if you have to walk under the tunnel from Concourse B to C or C to B. UA domestic and international flights all leave at the same Terminal. You do not need to go through TSA.
