Thanks for the local intel; I'll give Hertz another call tomorrow (perpetual busy tone).
Since you arrive so late maybe an airport area hotel/w shuttle for one night and rent the next morning? That opens up all the smaller ones and Hotwire and others for price.

MKE is requesting funding for centralizing security checkpoints+increased retail and restaurant space, with feasibility study in the works.

Centralized screening is one of the improvements I hear requested, most often. Greater vendor selection is probably the second most-requested.

If your booking for the last week of July.. the airshow is in Oshkosh and prices are through the roof because of it.

For those interested, in the coming weeks the first phase of the new baggage claim will be opening. Starting tomorrow new parts of the baggage road will be opened up for busses and shuttles.

Traffic increases at MKE, July 2014 over July 2013.

SIX CONSECUTIVE MONTHS OF PASSENGER INCREASES AT MITCHELL AIRPORT

More travelers choose MKE; passenger traffic rises 3.3% in July

MILWAUKEE (August 25, 2014) – For the sixth consecutive month, Milwaukee County’s General Mitchell International Airport (MKE) has recorded an increase in passenger traffic, rising 3.3% in July compared to July of 2013. 610,965 passengers used MKE last month. Year-to-date, Mitchell Airport's passenger traffic is up 2.7% from last year.

“This year’s sustained passenger growth shows that demand is increasing for air travel at Mitchell, and we continue to serve as an outstanding alternative to O’Hare for northern Illinois travelers,” said County Executive Chris Abele. “We have a fantastic airport with low fares, inexpensive parking, and great nonstop service. Just this morning, Southwest Airlines announced increased service on its routes from Milwaukee to New Orleans and Ft. Lauderdale, while Frontier Airlines announced new non-stop service to Orlando and Ft. Myers earlier this month.”

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation's Bureau of Travel Statistics, MKE's average airfares were nearly $57 less than O'Hare, and $24 less than the national average in the 1st Quarter of 2014.

Mitchell Airport offers nonstop flights to 36 destinations coast-to-coast – many on full-size mainline aircraft – and 160 international destinations are available from Milwaukee with just one connection.

MKE is served by Southwest/AirTran, Delta, United, American/US Airways, Frontier, and Air Canada. The complete list of nonstop cities can be found at www.mitchellairport.com.

General Mitchell International Airport is owned by Milwaukee County and operated by the Department of Transportation, Airport Division, under the policy direction of the Milwaukee County Executive and the County Board of Supervisors. The airport is entirely funded by user fees; no property tax dollars are used for the airport’s capital improvements or for its day-to-day operation.

July traffic

Haven't posted these in awhile -- here are July traffic stats for MKE:

Air Canada
2013 2,101 (0.4% share)
2014 3,085 (0.5% share)
+984, up 46.8%

American/US Airways
2013 69,242 (11.7% share)
2014 71,344 (11.7% share)
+2,102, up 3.0%

Delta
2013 155,416 (26.3% share)
2014 157,086 (25.7% share)
+1,625, up 1.0%

Frontier
2013 28,543 (4.8% share)
2014 31.645 (5.2% share)
+3,102, up 10.9%

Southwest/AirTran
2013 281,160 (47.5% share)
2014 287,847 (47.1% share)
+6,687, up 2.4%

United
2013 54,788 (9.3% share)
2014 58,792 (9.6% share)
+4,004, up 7.3%

Totals (including other)
2013 591,514
2014 610,065
+19,451, up 3.3%

Nice to see everybody's numbers up year over year. The average passengers per departure grew from 78.9 to 85.6, apparently due to larger aircraft or fuller planes, sometimes both.

Passengers per departure:
137.6 Frontier, up from 133.4
108.5 Southwest/AirTran, up from 97.4
101.2 Delta, up from 88.9
57.8 American/US Airways, up from 55.3
43.0 United, up from 41.9
30.9 Air Canada, up from 22.8

I would say that bigger aircraft are driving the numbers for Southwest and Delta. Less 717 and more 737s added seats on Southwest. And bigger 757 planes on the Delta ATL and MSP routes added a lot more seats than the MD90's and 88's. Also on DL, there has been some upgauge in equipment to DTW. More seats.

The new baggage claim area (or at least the first part of it) is lovely. Among the changes that have been made is one which will take me a while to re-learn: the new carousels run in a clockwise direction. The old ones ran counter-clockwise.

Global Entry arrives at MKE

From MKE newsletter...

If you have enrolled in Global Entry, your next international arrival into MKE will be streamlined, thanks to the installation of two Global Entry kiosks. The kiosks allow registered trusted travelers to receive expedited U.S. Customs and Border Protection processing in our International Arrivals Terminal. Mitchell Airport offers six non-stop destinations to Mexico and the Caribbean, and the Global Entry kiosks make the return to MKE much easier. To sign up, visit cbp.gov.

The airport has proposed in its 2015 budget the addition of jet bridges to D-54/55. Plans also call for removing the escalators on that end of the hammerhead and closing up floor to make more room on the concourse level. I assume this is to accommodate US/AA together.

It seems to me that there are also several unused Frontier gates on D that could be re-allocated to another airline. There is probably no possibility that Frontier will use all of its gates.
