This has obviously been in the works for awhile. I keep thinking back to some of the comments from the DO last week about Midwest adding codeshares with other airlines.

With this announcement, I'm assuming Frontier will move its flights to the D Concourse in MKE.

How long before Frontier pulls the plug on its partnership with AirTran?

When will AirTran drop its 1x daily MKE-DEN flight (which was converted to year round service)?

In any event, this is good news (but not surprising) ^

I would expect at some point Republic will merge the frequent flyer programs, I can't imagine there's much of a business case for running two separate programs for such relatively small airlines.

If/when the FL/F9 partnership goes away, AirTran will have to decide between:

A) Abandon the market and pull the single MKE-DEN trip
B) Add service since F9 won't be providing the service for FL frequent flyers

Perhaps AirTran saw the writing on the wall, and that's why they added their flight earlier this year, to at least try to establish the service before the partnership goes away.

Who knows

So the next question will be when is YX going to eliminate the direct flights to California? If you can feed people through DEN on F9, why do you need to go direct?

I actually think you'll be seeing more non-stop flights from MKE to the West Coast. There's plenty of demand, especially during peak periods, to places like SEA, SFO, and SAN.

Part of the reason to offer non-stops is to take pressure off of flights in places like DEN 9 (or MCI for YX) and ensure that passengers aren't being turned away due to a lack of capacity.

YX's new CEO has stated that he intends to grow the MKE hub and funnel more passengers through it. This will happen through increased flights and F9 passengers connecting in MKE to places like BOS, DCA, and CMH.

About the same time that F9 eliminates direct service to the east coast. If you can feed people through MKE on YX, why do you need to go direct?

That is not the same thing Midwest has one flight to LA from MKE Frontier serves multiple east cost cities from Denver

How convenient... YX and F9 share a gate at ATL.

Why not share gates at other airports? A good way to save money for both airlines.

They'll do this when UA stops serving the west coast nonstop from Chicago and feeds everyone through Denver.

Sure it's essentially the same thing...the only difference is scale.

Frontier wants to fly nonstop to the east coast because:
(a) traffic levels exists to support it
(b) a connecting DEN-east coast flight is not very competitive versus other airline nonstops
(c) feeder traffic into the DEN hub would have to double-connect to get to the east coast in markets such as BOI-LGA.

For these same reasons Midwest wants to fly nonstop to the west coast. The link with Frontier doesn't really change that.

JSOnline finally posted a story about this. I see in the story that this was in the works way before Republic decided to buy both airlines.

Midwest signed this deal with a carrier that already partners with one of Midwest's biggest competitors in Milwaukee, AirTran. The story should have also explored the future of AirTran's existing ff agreement with Frontier. It will be interesting to see if that survives.

This is just fantastic. I know that there are just tons of people in MKE that are jumping for joy now that they will be able to codeshare all the way to Fort Collins. I bet those flights are going to have at least 20 to 30 people on the wait list. LOL
