Problems with Slow Elevators at Chicago Marriott
I did a search for "slow elevator" and the only results were one thread specific to the NY Marquis and a single mention about the Waikiki elevators in another thread.
I am at the Chicago Downtown Marriott Magnificent Mile and have been getting really frustrated with the elevators. While it hasn't been 20 minutes like NY Marquis, it's been 5-7 minute waits and having to wait for the 2nd or 3rd elevator b/c the ones that come are jam packed. This is both in the morning and then early evening through late night. It's gotten to the point where I've seen multiple people who are on say floor 9, going up all the way to the top, just to get down to the Lobby b/c otherwise all the elevators that come are full.
Unlike, say the San Fran Marriott that has a low, middle, and high tier elevator, this one only has 2 tiers and it's also packed with convention folks. Regardless, I hate spending more than 30 minutes a day waiting for elevators!
Have any other people experienced elevator problems at this hotel? Is there anything I can do (aside from sucking it up or moving to a new hotel)? Is this something that is worth complaining to the GM about (I'm really not after points or anything, but the frustration has just been building up)?

next car please..........
i had the same problem here as well recently. it is an older hotel that was not designed for big conventions. Also the elevators are off in the corner that get a crowd around them waiting for the next car
plus side here - the concierge lounge is fantastic.

THis is not a new issues with the elevators. I don't think they know what fast is in this property. I have stayed here 4 - 5 times over the years. Always the same slow elevators

I had the same issue. My story was a little worse. I was waiting in floor 38 for about 8 minutes. It was me and a family of four. Finally the elevator showed up and there was space for one more person- so I got on and the family just stayed there (the kids were already talking about taking the stairs with all their luggage- that's a lot of steps). I get on and the elevator stops at 37. There is a family of 3 waiting there. Someone in the back says "sorry there's no room". At which point the guy waiting says "we're getting on- we've been waiting 10 minutes". He pushes his little kid on and then his wife. When he gets on he pushes me and I would've fallen down if there was any room to fall down. Instead I bang into the lady behind me who hits the person behind her into the wall. This guy doesn't apologize or anything- a real pleasant fellow. For people paying hundreds of dollars a night there has got to be a better system/service. Every time I waited over 5 minutes for an elevator except the one time time I went down at 6:30 a.m. Anyway, I checked out and went to the Renaissance. Now that is a hotel- much nicer rooms, much friendlier staff, and an overall much much better experience- never waited for an elevator for more than 15 seconds (and I was on the 25th floor). I recommend it way way way more than the Marriott.

I usually stay at the Chicago Marriott 5-10 times a year. I really like the hotel because of the Concierge Lounge and free Internet for Gold and Plats. On the other hand, the Renn (which I've stayed at 2-3 times) is more upscale and less-convention like). The lounge is not as good and there is no free internet.
I stayed at the Chicago Marriott and the elevator situation was a disaster. I don't remember this being a big problem in the past but I must have spent 30-45 minutes waiting for the elevator to go to the C-lounge for breakfast, waiting for the elevator to come back, and then waiting to go down to head out after breakfast. I was almost late for a meeting because of the elevator wait time. It was my sense that not all the elevators were running.
I meant to write the GM to raise the issue. Does anyone have his/her email?

This is a very big convention. There are 15-20,000 attendees for the American Education Research Association meeting and the Marriott is one of four host hotels. So there is a huge amount of traffic at the times when sessions start and end. I'm here at the Marriott also and have not found it as bad (generally 1-4 minute waits) probably better luck in the times I have been going up and down.
Because the meeting rooms are stacked up on floors 1-9 it is putting a lot of strain on the elevators. Other hotels with an escalator system are better for this sort of meeting.

I avoid this hotel. Between slow elevators, very busy/noisey, and poor environmental controls in the rooms. I prefer the Renn a few blocks away. Although I will say the club room is the best in Chicago. The breakfast is great and the evening snacks are decent.

Well, for what my 2 cents is worth...
In my (much) younger days I used to move office furniture...on more than one occasion I had been crammed with little elbow room in an elevator with two desks on end on dollies and got stuck...on one occasion for close to two hours. Not fun. I think it induced the old claustrophobic reaction in me (and since). I am hesitant to enter crammed elevators full of people as a result. Some of these are easy to overload also...enjoy the trip towards the bottom...
My present line of work (not firefighting) has caused me to see more than a few highrise fires over the years, ask anyone who has experienced one-not fun. For those of you enjoying the view on the 36th floor-good luck.
That leads me to my last comment...I am willing to take an elevator up high for a view for dinner...but I never intend to stay overnight past the 5th floor which is basically the extent of firefighting removal via ladder (I think some do go a little higher).
Bravo to all of you who like to stay up high...I list my preference for a lower floor and insist on it. I get used to the stairs.

Slow elevators have also been a problem for me at this hotel. During a stay last month, 15 minute waits were not uncommon.
