Edinburgh speculation (SPG)??

Hi. I am going to be in Edinburgh at the end of September, 2016. I can book the Edinburgh Residence Inn but am wondering if I should hold off for now. I know that this is pure speculation, but with the Marriott - SPG acquisition, would I have a chance at booking the Sheraton Grand Hotel and Spa using Marriott Reward Points? It looks to be a nicer property. Thoughts, anyone?

Would be a longer shot IMO. Possibly, shortly after the merger, they might put some temporary reciprocal process into effect to redeem other the others program, kind of what Southwest did about AirTran. But that merger dragged on forever. But I would book the RI just in case.

People don't expect the programs to be interchangeable until 2017 or later. I would just book the RI for now. As long as it's not a prepaid rate, you can always cancel and book if for some miraculous reason the merger happens quicker than expected.

Glasshouse is a good MR Hotel, albeit expensive on a points stay
I'd avoid the airport Marriott at all costs

Why? I am a very frequent stayer at that hotel and can't fault it - easy to get to, free parking, lovely and friendly staff and decent sized bedrooms although the bathroom is a bit on the small side I grant you, but still functions fine.

I had a horrible stay at the FS Marriott out by the airport this summer. It was only one night, but we were put into a small/dingy room, no recognition of Platinum status, etc. I did subsequently get an apology from their GM stating that it was a trainee oversight, but it left a bad taste in my mouth.

Had a fabulous stay at The Glasshouse for 5 nights, including an upgrade to a suite!

Cannot comment on the RI, we didn't even walk by it.

One thought - when does the new Edinburgh CY (which will be on the same block as the Glasshouse) open? It was being built this summer, but I have no clue how far away it is from opening.

If you thought the rooms were small, you've obviously not stayed in the Glasgow one then, the rooms there are much smaller! On the plus side, their bathrooms are bigger than Edinburgh's.

Thanks for explaining though.

As of now, no vacancy at Glasshouse (MRP or $) for the dates I'll be there. Did book the RI but I'll keep checking.

Ha! Actually I have stayed at the Glasgow Marriott, so yes, I know what you mean. But seriously our room at the FS Marriott Edinburgh was actually smaller and worse than Glasgow. So I am sure you can imagine why my stay was so horrible.

Glasshouse just became available. I booked it with MRP and cancelled RI so all's well that ends well.

Enjoy! We were there on a paid stay (got an amazing rate, having booked months in advance) and got upgraded to a wonderful suite as a Plat, The Bowmore.

We stayed at the RI this past March. It is very nice and in a good location near the university. The staff was very courteous. Our room was spacious. The bathroom was very nice as well. It is in a newly developed area. The entire facility was in very good working condition and still had that "new car" feel about it. While it won't have the old world charm of Glasshouse, RI is very modern, you will be pleased with its amenities and convenient location. Not really sure just how much more you'd really get from SPG. The RI won't be romantic, but it's useful - quite useful.

What is the parking situation for the RI? I'm always put off trying it because I have my car with me and the website doesn't mention anything about parking location, just directions to the place.

Perhaps we had the same trainee but with a better outcome: staying 3 nights free on cat 4 certificates and no status we got upgraded to a family suite with executive lounge access.
