Legacy to New Travel Package Conversion (effective August 2019)
A Marriott supervisor can currently convert your legacy travel package into the new category mapping. If you hold a Category 6, 8, or Tier 1-3 legacy certificate, it's ideal to downgrade your certificate before converting so that points don't potentially get lost in the process.
The codes for the new partial packages are:
New Cat 1-4: QP83
New Cat 5: QP91
New Cat 6: QP99
New Cat 7:
The legacy certificates map to the new certificates as such:
Cat 1-5 => Cat 1-4
Cat 6 => Cat 1-4
Cat 7 => Cat 5
Cat 8 => Cat 5
Cat 9 => Cat 6
Tier 1-3 => Cat 6
Tier 4-5 => Cat 7
==================================================
If you are unsure where you will use your 7 night stay, when you request the package, just ask for a category 1-5 hotel. That way you are out of the least number of points. If later, you decide to book for a higher level category, then you can do so and pay the difference the travel package points. If you can't use your certificate within the year, then as close to the one year anniversary (without going over!) call to extend the certificate for one more year. That's as long as they will typically allow, one extension. There is an option to expedite the mileage delivery to within three business days (sometimes faster) for $15. There are reports that this fee may be waived for platinum members.
Effective April 1 2017 re: Southwest & the companion pass:
"Purchased points, points converted from hotel and car loyalty programs, and e-Rewards, e-Miles, Valued Opinions and Diners Club, points earned from Rapid Rewards program enrollment, tier bonuses, flight bonuses, and partner bonuses (excluding points bonuses earned on the Rapid Rewards Credit Cards from Chase) do not count toward Companion Pass."

I had to wait 45 minutes to get through an agent, but I did a Cat 9 travel package for 390,000 pts. Went fairly smoothly the agent knew exactly what to do, the code was 990T.
I went ahead book the hotel in Barcelona, The Cotton House, as I plan to be in Spain in December. Will see what the situation is in Aug.

I have an expiring 7-night cat 1-5 at end of July. Can I upgrade it with 30K to the cat 6 to get a one year extension. Then after a couple of weeks (before Aug 1st), downgrade it back to cat 1-5, get my 30K back and have the cat 1-5 certificate with one year extension?
I'm planning on this because I have not read of anyone successfully getting a one year extension on their 7-night cat 1-5 certificates lately.

I also have a travel package Cat 8. At the moment, waiting for availability to open for Maui in December. Of course, the Marriott Maui is closed to award bookings. Decided that if it does not open, then the Westin would be a good option after August 1st merger and SPG properties coming to Marriott, as Peak and Off-Peak system does not start until 2019. One thing is for sure, after looking at this, I do want to use the Travel Package and be done with Marriott for a good while. It was a good run, with 4 Travel Packages (including two 5 night ones they gave me without being an MVC owner) redeemed in the last 3 years.
Ohh, and I forgot, 4 years of WN Companion Pass

Now we REALLY need to know what happens to existing packages, because that means it's definitely going to be worth it to redeem before the devaluation hits.

I just called MVCI and ordered a 5 night Leisure Package for UA. It cost me 235,000 MRP for 120,000 Mileage Plus Miles.
Do you think I should upgrade to a higher cat hotel while I can?
Does it make sense to order a second package now so I can invite someone to come with me? I don’t like to share my room with anyone but my daughter and she can’t come with me.
