I'd call Marriott HQ in Maryland. Don't waste your time with the franchisee (most likely).

I hope Marriott HQ responds that a room equivalent to what the OP paid for, for free, was adequate compensation.

I want to give the manager a chance to explain the issue. If it was a one-off kind of thing, and he explains the procedures he took to ensure that it's been rectified and won't happen again, blah blah, I don't feel a need to publicly embarrass the property. It's obviously an issue and one that would result in a negative image for the hotel.
If the response leads me to believe that the issue isn't being addressed seriously, then I'll decide then.

Let me take a moment to respond to some of these questions.
The whole point of posting on here is that there were two simultaneous issues--a dirty room, and very poor customer service both by the hotel and Marriott guest services. The front desk manager at the hotel was unresponsive to several suggestions, including repeated offers on my part to pay a rack rate for a suite at another hotel. Her continued response was simply 'there's nothing.' When I went to the other hotel, availability opened up. I then had to spend the better part of 90 minutes trying to get this woman (who was all of three minutes away across the street) to deign to speak with the second hotel. The same problem occurred in the morning over the exact same issue.
Regarding the timing, my girlfriend was meeting me at the hotel at ~8pm. This was between 3 and 6.
I think it's irrelevant whether I was in a room or suite. I'd treat it as though I booked a regular room, as a business traveler, with no car or option to just go home. You may not find a group of spiders to be extremely disturbing--I do. I think it's a fair feeling of uneasiness. I was then provided with an equivalent room at another hotel.

Ok, so let me see if I have this correct...
The OP booked a cheap rate at a nearby hotel. Hotel staff agreed to upgrade to a jacuzzi suite. At check-in, the suite has many spiders. OP opts not to stay at that particular hotel.
The hotel calls 2 other hotels, one that's not as nice as the other has room, the nicer one doesn't. The OP still goes to the nicer hotel, and manages to get a room. The front desk clerk there doesn't understand why the manager at the first hotel wants them to call to confirm they'll take care of the bill. The next morning, the OP has to call again, to confirm that breakfast and parking was part of the package.
The OP wants more than the night, breakfast, and parking comped.
My thoughts:
I wouldn't stay somewhere if there were multiple spiders in the room either. However, if it was 20 minutes from my house, I'd probably opt to just go home and stay there. I might try to bargain for points and/or stay credit.
My guess is that the manager at hotel A contacted hotel C to tell them to hold the room, and probably arranged payment then. By the OP going to hotel B and managing to get a room, this means that the manager now has to give the payment information to hotel B, and contact hotel C to tell them not to hold the room.
Sounds to me as if the front desk clerk at hotel B didn't understand why hotel A would be paying for your room, and didn't want to go through the effort of calling hotel A.
When hotel B did talk to hotel A, somewhere in there, it was not communicated that the package you booked included breakfast and parking. At the same time, I question if the manager realized that comping your room elsewhere meant also picking up the tab for your breakfast and parking there.
I think the hotel was really only responsible for finding appropriate equal accommodations for the night. That doesn't mean a jacuzzi suite, since that was a nice perk and upgrade, but rather, the regular room you booked.
I'd say that the compensation was the comped night.

I snapped a picture on my cell phone which clearly identifies the suite (a jacuzzi and the finishes are pretty distinctive) and am considering posting it on tripadvisor. I don't want to embarrass the property, but other travelers really should be aware of what goes on there...

So .... You have explained that the offending Hotel was dirty as well as having "very poor customer service". Your experience at all levels was terrible at best (my words not yours).
Time and time again in this forum we have OP's that refuse to name a property, and in my opinion its usually to try to insure they get "their compensation" prior to naming names. Major cities, Northern City ... PLEASE !! Have a spine, take a chance, go out on that limb and tell us the name of the property.

I just spent some time in South America, and, well, you have to make your peace with bugs there. However, this is a major city hotel in the Northern US. Additionally, these weren't 'outside' bugs; they were lovely creepy-crawling things.
I greatly preferred not to stay in the same hotel, as this wasn't just one spider on the bedsheets, it was several dozen all around.
Any thoughts as to what I should be asking for? I snapped a picture on my cell phone which clearly identifies the suite (a jacuzzi and the finishes are pretty distinctive) and am considering posting it on tripadvisor. I don't want to embarrass the property, but other travelers really should be aware of what goes on there...

Just happened to me. Woke up this morning and bathroom was infested with hundreds of spiders. It was the best room in the hotel king hospitality suite. Asked for an upgrade at a hotel I frequent a few times a year. none available so they asked the manager if they coould give me this room. It was really freaky my wife saw them when she went in this morning and just let out a loud scream. I had been in there during the night half asleep..bare feet ...still iching ..lol
But the hotel is oh well.... do you want to change your room..Should I raise a stink?
