From what I read, the OP did try to prepare for his needs ahead of time by communicating with the property and they failed to deliver upon arrival. I have seen rooms magically appear when I play the status card or talk with FDM or GM, especially with an early arrival. Regardless of status, they should live up to their promisses.

Personally, I think this "event" is over and it's time to move on. If the OP has had other dealings with the event coordinator, they should know if it is not how the OP works. If it has been the standard, then he may not be asked back, and that's fine. A single event does not make a trend, but sure can start one.

My take on the whole incident:

- The room should have been ready cause you informed them well in advance of your needs & they agreed to it.
- They didn't violate your privacy by any means as the hotel & the group rep had your details which are obligatory to make a booking.
- It was unprofessional on the group reps part to poke you, the gm did his duty by informing the group rep the case has been resolved.
- There is nothing wrong in flashing ur status card , you have earned it u deserve the benefits, but never arm twist the staff . there is a thin fine line between the two.
- Things might not go as planned always , hence learn to be flexible. You might have a confirmed room but there can be delays & instead of using last resort tactics ( calling cust rep etc) trying finding solutions amicable ie by requesting to use the gym to change & freshen up .
- All in all small incidents occur let bye gones be by gones & learn to move on in life !!

IF one reads the OP's post, it states he "exchanged a few emails with the gm requesting an upgrade and the possibility of a paid amenity"

Nowhere does he indicate he requested an early-check in, nor does he say the GM ever agreed to anything at all.

how can the hotel be faulted for not delivering on something which was never requested or agreed to?

Seriously, you "exchanged several e-mails with the GM" to make sure that, as a gold, you got a room upgrade and talked about "the possibility of paying for a welcome amenity"? Then you got pissy because your upgraded room wasn't ready when you were arriving mere hours before your important presentation? And then you called Marriott corporate to elevate things to that level, and are upset that the GM was rightly miffed at your entitlement attitude?

Then I have to question your judgment further if you KNEW that the GM and your Group Rep are "close" but you somehow expected them not to communicate?

It sounds like you were behaving like a spoiled brat, other people noted it and talked about it (behind your back, you no doubt feel), and you're inventing a new slight to get upset about. I suggest that you rethink your attitude, behavior, and inflated sense of worth.

To answer the question on the bottom of your post, "Is this a gross invation of my privacy as a Marriott guest, or am I missing something?", you are most definitely missing something.
