Any idea how Marriott Cheques/Checks would fare?

I don't believe this is the case anymore for gift cards. This is the ONLY benefit as far as I can tell with the new system. The hotel has to get the exchange rate off of givex, and they don't charge an international 3% fee like the VISA based cards used to. Indeed, when I checked out of the Brussels Ren I found it funny that the rate of my gift card exchange was nearly 10% better than my bonus bucks (which was exchanged at the hotel's rate).

This was my experience to, at several international hotels. Great exchange rate (but routinely had to wait 20 minutes for them to figure it out and some initially refused).

Ditto here as to the exchange rate. I've used gift cards in Marriott properties outside the US and the rate they give is the interbank rate at the time you pay.

I had to pay a remaining balance once, and did so with a Marriott Rewards VISA (which also does not charge the 3% add-on fee); the conversion rate the VISA used was the rate about a day later when the charge posted, and it was a lower (worse) rate than the Givex rate was.

Generally the Marriott Cheques are treated same as cash, which would mean the exchange rate they would charge if you tendered dollars in cash. That, as an earlier poster noted, is usually about 10% worse than the gift card rate.

Marriott Cheques are probably best saved for use where the room rate is charged in dollars; overseas a no-fee credit card would work better.

Redeeming Marriott gift cards - restrictions

Hi guys,

Recently purchased 5x $100 Marriott gift cards at Skymall (for the 25K Delta SkyMiles promotion at SkyMall). They did credit my SkyMiles account despite gift cards not being eligible for the promotion.

I assumed that these would be valid at Ritz properties, but looks like they are not. Does anyone know if these can be used to pay for rooms at regular Marriott properties, or if it's just for additional services (e.g. dinner, massages, etc)?

Also - assume that you would still earn Marriott points, but does using a gift card change anything on this?

Thanks!

They can be used to pay for room charges in marriott properties.

You can now use any gift card at any MI brand

you can now use any MI branded gift card or travel card at any MI branded property with the exception of Execustay, Marriott Executive Apt and Bulgari....this is a recent change to the standards....I know this question has been coming up repeatedly recently so I thought I'd share (yes this means you can use a Ritz-Carlton card at a Marriott and vice versa)

Hello all,

To clarify, you may now purchase Ritz-Carlton gift cards for use at Ritz-Carlton Hotels. You may still purchase Marriott gift cards for use at Marriott participating brands, excluding Ritz-Carlton properties. If this changes we will let you know but as of today the terms of use for Marriott gift cards is still the following:

Marriott GiftCards may be used at participating JW Marriott®, EDITION℠, Autograph Collection®, Renaissance® Hotels, Marriott® Hotels & Resorts, Courtyard® by Marriott, AC Hotels by Marriott®, Fairfield Inn & Suites® by Marriott, SpringHill Suites® by Marriott, Residence Inn® by Marriott, TownePlace Suites® by Marriott and Marriott Vacation ClubSM and participating hotel outlets: retail, spa, golf and food and beverage. Card carries no value until activated. Card is a prepaid card, not a credit card or debit card, and is the property of and issued by MI Fulfillment Services, LLC. There is no expiration date for card. Card is not redeemable for cash, in any amount except when otherwise required by applicable law. Card becomes inactive upon use of all card value. Card may not be used to secure or confirm a reservation. Each transaction will be debited against card balance, if transaction exceeds balance, user must pay the difference. Lost, stolen or damaged cards will be replaced only if previously registered. Value of replaced card will equal balance on card at the time it was reported lost, stolen or damaged. To check card balance, go to gifts.marriott.com or call 800.442.6132. Account balance information outside the U.S. and Canada: Use the AT&T® access number for the country code you are calling in conjunction with 800.442.6132.

Marie,

The weekly update seemed to state you could use any gift card at any brand now with few exceptions (now I did read it very quickly) but it seemed to imply at least that you could use a MHRS branded gift card at RC

Delta3MM Nov 14, 2011 7:40 pm

I really would like to know which of you is correct. I mean, both of you have a lot of weight on this board. I for one, use gift cards extensively, and I DON'T stay at Ritz because they don't accept Marriott Gift cards.

If that changes, I might.

Billy

[QUOTE=Marriott Concierge;17447907] "Lost, stolen or damaged cards will be replaced only if previously registered. Value of replaced card will equal balance on card at the time it was reported lost, stolen or damaged."

It appears that this is a huge improvement in that lost or stolen cards are replaceable if registered. I believe that Marriott previously warned that all risk of loss or theft was on Marriott's customers in that Marriott would not replace cards under any circumstances.

Yes, but when you go to register the card, the site just says

Register Card feature coming soon!

I would guess that with the rules explicitly providing that registration=protection, and with Marriott not providing a method of registration, the risk is on Marriott.

Billy, what is the benefits of using the gift cards so much, outside the not too often promos for 10% off or such. Am I missing out on something?

Thanks - Joshua

Socrates,

This is the information I have gotten, but I'm double checking on it now. I'll let you know what I find out.

Kind regards,

Marie
