Does Marriott treat Gift cards as cash?
Hi,
I bought a Marriott gift card using the MR reward points, can i just use this gift card to partly pay my next stay at Marriott. Or will they say that at the time of booking you need to specify that this is a gift card booking ? Has anyone experienced ? Thanks, |
Treated as cash. Just present either at check in or check out.

More specifically should be treated as a Visa payment. But have seen postings that it may or may not qualify as a Visa payment for the Mega Bonus currently in play.

But check your receipt carefully. Half the time the post incorrectly. A quick call the CS and they will fix it for you.

Marriott gift card questions - Help needed
As many of you know, right now, Marriott gift cards can be purchased and get southwest or delta miles here.
https://www.marriottvacationcardoffer.com/southwest https://www.marriottvacationcardoffer.com/delta 1. Is there a way to go to these via cashback site and double dip? Discover says excludes gift cards. Big crumbs has 4% cashback but the link takes you to https://gifts.marriott.com but the the above miles offers are at marriottvacationcardoffer.com If I can combine both, that would be great. The hertz offer shows up on this gifts.marriott.com site but no links for other offers. 2. Any one know how these are charged? I have Marriott card that gives bonus points on Marriott, Amex open that gives 5% on Marriott stays and delta that gives double points on delta purchases? I want to use the right card for this additional dip. 3. How does using gift cards show up on the check out statement? I assume it shows up like some kind of payment and not as a discount and will not have any problem submitting with expense reimbursement. I have a long stay and settle my bill every week. Any advise on how to use these? Just give the gift card at weekly settlement and say charge it? Can I use more than one gift card at a time and it all works OK such as charging whatever is left and clearly show up itemized on the receipt? Any suggestions would be great. Sorry, too many questions. |
First of all they are 'vacation cards', not GC. There are more restrictions on them than the GC.
I don't think you can double dip with cash back with this offer. You may get cash back via your credit card but not via big crumbs. I'm not even sure how to use the vacation cards for advance purchase rates - I asked Marriott concierge once but never got a proper reply. If it's a GC, then it's like a prepaid card that the amount is deducted and you have to keep track of how much is left. I normally asked if the FD can write down the remaining amount so that I have an idea of how much is left. |

Or you can call 1-800-442-6132 and find out there. |
Welcome to FlyerTalk, maryjo11!
According to their terms and conditions, they cannot be "cashed in". However, reportedly some states (California?) require a cash-out capability of some sort. There is a Marriott gift store on-line, and if you have a true "Gift Card" (as contrasted to a "Travel Card" or a "Vacation Card") you can use the Gift Card to make purchases there. Reportedly some folks offer their unwanted gift cards on such sites as eBay. This may be inconsistent with the terms and conditions of the card, though. Gift Cards no longer expire, I'm told. |
How are gift cards posted at foreign (not US) Mariott hotels? Converted at credit card rates or at the hotel's internal conversion rate?
In general are they accepted at all foreign Mariotts? I just saw in another post that the cards I am condisering buying are "vacation cards" not gift cards. How does this affect their use? |
Marriott gift card
I have a 250 $ Marriott Gift card that i bought so that i can get southwest RRewards ,If I use this Marriott GC to pay for my stay at Residence inn will
1) Will I get points 2) Will Referral work Admin Pls move to appropriate forum if deemed necessary |
Marriott GCs are supposed to be treated just like paying with cash. So yes, you should still get points. Note that sometimes Marriott front desk agents haven't been trained completely on GCs though and don't process them correctly. If they reduce what you owe by the amount of the GC, you can let them know that that they misapplied the GC. If they still don't know how or want to process it correctly, you can call MR and get them to help you get the points you should have received.
Note that Marriott's long-term stay properties (RI is one of them) only receive 5 pts/$ rather than the normal 10 pts/$. So realize that you won't get as many points staying there as you would at most other Marriott properties. And a referral bonus shouldn't be affected in any way by your paying for a stay with a GC. |
