you can go straight to Ret. Dept w/out talking to regular CSR. Just need to follow prompts and select 'close card' at one point.

CSR offered waived the ann.fee, so i kept the card open.

Perhaps this isn't the right place to ask but there have been some mentions here of people canceling their Amex Gold and using this card instead.

I have a Gold Premiere, which I like due to the category bonuses (3x on airfare, 2x on groceries). But the thing I probably value the most are the ticket presales. I managed to snag Book of Mormon tickets here in SF during the presale and got really really good seats for half the price of a "general sales" ticket -- mostly due to the fact that tickets are bought by bots and sold at a huge markup.

Does the SPG Amex provide access to the same AMEX presales as well? Also, will my MR points expire if I have the SPG Amex but cancel my Gold Premiere?

In canada the presale is for all Amex card holders, not just the gold.

Hmm, thanks, but what about in the US? And will my MR points stick around?

The presales are available to all cardholders in the US. However, the Amex Preferred Seating is not available to the SPG Amex cardholder.

I cannot address whether you will retain your MR points.

Pretty sure the MR points disappear if you don't have an MR card anymore. I cancelled my wife's last MR card and had to empty out the points first - or lose them. She retained her SPG card.

That's not true. I cancelled my MR program long ago and still had points for years. Too few to redeem - but they were there.

I'm not sure how you'd even know that now. Maybe it was different once, but I just tried to log in to MR with my wife's account, since I know there were some orphan miles left in there (<1000). Each time I log in, I just end up back at the main cards page, and since no card has an MR account, I can't see a balance.

So while I can't deny what you're saying outright, I can't see how you'd be able to see that point balance either.

Perhaps the points stay but you cannot use them unless you open another Amex MR card?

I simply logged into americanexpress.com - then clicked "rewards" in the top nav and then "membership rewards home". It then shows my MR balance, which is still there even though I haven't belonged to this program for many years. I just checked today... and they are still there.

That's what I tried in my wife's account. I get "enroll now."

I don't know why it shows something different for you. Does she still have an active Amex card? I have numerous active cards - but quit MR because I didn't want to pay the $45 fee. The points just sat there and are still there. I quit years ago - perhaps they changed this for people who more recently quit and I'm grandfathered? Can't say. But I can say my points are def still there.
