A week later, I called about my business SPG Amex and they offered to waive the $65 annual fee, so I kept it open. Now I'm wondering whether I should have closed that anyway. The reason is Amex typically won't give you a sign up bonus if you had the same card within the last year, so will having the business SPG card keep me from getting another 25k point sign up bonus?

Should I call in a couple of months and just cancel the business SPG as well?

Thanks.

Anyone? Bottom line, does Amex give you the bonus only if you haven't had the same card within the last 12 mo's? If so, that means I should close all SPG cards when the renewal comes up.

Found my answer on Thepointsguy.com:
"Amex specifies that the welcome bonus is not available to applicants who have had this product in the last 12 months, so if you’ve had the personal card within the last 12 months (not just applied for it, but actually had it open), you can’t apply for the personal version now, and same with the business version, though if you have one or the other version, you can apply for the one you don’t have now."

So, the sooner you close an account, the sooner your 12 months comes up for the identical card with a new bonus.

How many stay/night credits?

I have both a personal and business card and receive 5 nights/2 stay credits for each card.

I own multiple businesses with each having it's own EIN. If I get a new SPG Amex for each business...will I get the stay/nights credits for each business too?

According to the terms, a Card Member is eligible for one of the 5 nights/2 stay credit, regardless of having multiple accounts.

https://www262.americanexpress.com/a...ge/95-1000-198

10 Upon opening your Card Account, and by February 15 of each subsequent calendar year it is open, you will receive from Starwood credit for 2 stays toward your Starwood Preferred Guest Elite status and credit for 5 nights toward your Starwood Preferred Guest Elite status. This benefit is limited to one annual 2 stay credit and one annual 5 night Elite status credit per Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card account. You will not receive additional 2 stay or 5 night Elite status credits if you have multiple Card Accounts. Credits and status are subject to terms and conditions of the Starwood Preferred Guest program.

So, you can get 2/5 for the personal card and 2/5 for the business card only.

Follow-up

I received a phone call from a SPG AMEX rep tonight telling me that her research showed that I have another AMEX card and, therefore, AMEX was not giving me the additional 15,000 points.

The rep then saw that my other AMEX card was a Hilton one, said Oops, and gave me the 15,000 points.

If anyone else is not getting the remaining points, ask why. A Hilton AMEX card should NOT prevent you from getting the sign-up points on a SPG AMEX card.

I called SPG AMEX to ask if I could get the higher bonus (i.e. an additional 5,000 points.) After talking to various reps (because the line got dropped while transferring the call) who said it was possible, the last rep told me categorically no - that I would get only 25,000 points in total.

I am still waiting for the remaining 15,000 points and called SPG AMEX today when a rep told me I would get only the initial 10,000 points and that there is no additional 15,000 points forthcoming.

I applied online and have no paper trail. What now?

Dear Lurker/SPG/Amex-Could you please add something to this spg card product that gives a little spice like SPG Platinum status after $100k spend or how about get rid of the foreign forex fee? I know you have heard this stuff before but you have fallen behind and never caught up with the other products.

In response to platinum status as a card benefit, someone at Starwood already said something to the effect of "over my dead body."

Just a reminder for everyone to double check their Starwood Amex account each month. As you know one of the benefits of the card is to provide double points for eligible Starwood stays. However, after going through my past 3 statements, 2 of them had incorrectly posted less Starwood points than I was entitled to. I had to call Amex to put in a request (which takes 2-3 weeks to process) before any credits will be applied.

Luckily I checked my statement since the difference in points was large (>1,000 points). Just a reminder for everyone else to check yours. Starwood American Express may be shortchanging you too (according to them it's not on purpose - it's just that some hotels are tagged incorrectly). And they use "customer feedback" to identify them. Seems a poor way to run a program imo.

While I agree that it seems very improbably, the OP is right that you can get better levels of status with other hotel cards (Hilton, Hyatt, Priority Club come to mind) than with SPG. SPG just gets you up one level while the others do plenty more.

Depends on how you count:
  • Chase Hyatt Visa - confers basic elite status (Plat); allows earning of stay/night credits part of way toward Diamond status with $20/40K/annum
  • Chase IHG (Pri Club) - confers basic elite status (Plat)
  • Citi Hilton Visa - confers basic elite status (silver)
  • Citi Hilton Reserve - confers 2nd-level elite status (Gold), for annual fee
  • SPG Amex - Confers pseudo-elite status (PG+), plus 2 night/5 stay credit; allows one to earn Gold w/$30K spend/annum

Does anyone know how many days it usually takes for the points to hit the account after meeting the spending requirement? I met the requirement 1 week ago and still no points, my SO got the points within 3 days of the requirement. Why the difference?

It's called batch processing. If you are under 30, you may not be aware of this practice, which predates real time processing.

Obviously, you're joking. The SPG Amex is one of the best products out there but that's not good enough for you. You want more - lots more, but it ain't happening. Getting a value of 2.5 cents on the dollar is enough for most of us. Just be glad this card hasn't dropped the amount of Starpoints you earn per dollar. And don't bother the Lurker. He doesn't work for the credit card division of Amex. They negotiate to BUY the benefits you get from SPG. I don't think they want to pay even more. Amex Hilton should have taught you that they can take back what they give if it's too generous.
