I would like to get in on it but I just got the HHonors AMEX and also wanted to grab the Chase MileagePlus Explorer card (am flying United next month and want the bag check fee waived + received a targeted offer for 55K miles/fee waived). I want to ensure that I can meet the spend requirements of both cards, so I was thinking of holding off a month or two, meeting spend on the United card and giving my Hhonors AMEX app some time to settle before applying for the *wood.

I'm sure I *could* meet the spend requirement if needed (6 months is a long time), but I'm pretty new to the churn game and I would rather hit one at a time for now if I can!

Also...is there any risk to signing up for a business card for personal expenses? I could argue that my wife does nutrition consulting and teaches food classes as a "business" but it would be a stretch to explain all of the charging away as business expense...

(New to FlyerTalk, so please let me know if I'm asking these questions in the wrong place!)

September 4th :) I just got mine and I'm happy :)

In order to get bag fee waived on UA you must purchase the ticket with the MP Explorer card so your boarding pass get coded properly for free baggage. If you have already purchase your ticket your strategy will not work.

While your advice is sound, your conclusion is unsupported. Given United's vagaries, nobody knows what strategies will or won't work. I say roll the dice and flash the MP card if necessary. Will that work? I don't know. Neither do you.

Not saying it will or will not work - in regards to the MP flash and free baggage check.

My experience has been that I have been able to do it for myself and family on multiple occasions this year, as late as this month.

Thanks for the 'put on the MP card - I was probably going to get it just for the bonus points anyway, I'll tell my wife to flash the card, but I won't count on getting the bag check comped.

Back to the SPG discussion...since I just received the Hhonors card (just applied 2 weeks ago), do you think AMEX will hassle me if I apply for the SPG card? My wife and I have very good credit, and the Hhonors is my first and only AMEX.

Mine also posted this morning (8/20) - my initial purchase was on 8/17.

The initial 10k posts almost immediately after you use the card. The **issue** I have had is getting the threshold points. I was on the 25k promo from February (10k + 15k after $5k) -- after hitting the $5k spending threshold I contacted Amex when the points didn't post. They said I have to wait 6-8 weeks before they'll even investigate. So, I waited .... now that it has been 8 weeks, I contact them again, only to find out that they're saying my account is only 'coded' to receive the 10k first use bonus. I sent them a cut and paste of the promo I responded to (which includes the 15k threshold bonus), Amex is usually good with customer service so I'm not expecting any issues.

Now the real 'win' would be if they gave me the extra 5,000 SPG points given the promo is higher now. I'm going to try to get my 15k first, then i'll ask for the extra 5k -- don't want to confuse the issues.

My referee got approved for her card on 8/10 - no referral points posted so far. How long do I wait and who do I contact to start the "fight" for getting my points?

they say expect 6-8 weeks for the points to list.

Correct - I sent a secure message and that's what they told me. They also said to give them the name and address of the approved cardholder and after I gave it to them they said that they will expedite the process of receiving the 5k points which I'll see if that happens.

Now I am having trouble with people getting referral e-mails from me. I had a couple of people interested in opening a business SPG card and I referred them from my SPG business card and I got the e-mail confirmation thanking me for the referrals but they got nothing. I got my e-mails within 3 mins of sending the referrals and it's been almost 24 hours and they still got nothing and they have not blocked SPG Amex from sending them e-mails - checked Spam, junk, trash, etc. and nothing came. Anyone know what the issue could be?

yOyOYoo Aug 23, 2012 5:48 pm

Are the referral emails individual specific or does it direct to the exact same application page?

Referral question

Is there any way to refer someone to a business SPG card when you only have a personal SPG card?

No, you can only refer someone to the product that you carry yourself.

just a random but maybe useful datapoint for others - a reported revenue for your business of $13K a year does not meet amex's criteria for issuing the biz version of this card regardless of your personal income situation. not sure what the actual required number is.

Anyone else have any info to add on this?

Not to discount that data point (which I'm sure is true for the poster), but all I can say is that has not been my very recent experience.
