this property is only recently (less than one year) transformed from a local SHANGHAIESE get-rich-quick scheme (Mr. Shen who is transforming from "sheep eat farmer" English lagent to a SHANGHAIESE style international lodge), buying into the SPG chain, what would you expect buddy?

Ultimately, the decision on whether or not to go forward rests with Starwood, which like all respectable operators can demand improvments before putting its brand(s) on the line. That said, I think the recent emergence of suboptimal flag properties in Shanghai (Regent, Bund Hyatt, Sofitel Jinjiang, even the St. Regis) suggests that the balance of power is shifting because the flags seem increasingly eager to snatch up real estate while it still exists.

Sheraton Shanghai Pudong ready?

Anybody stay at the new Sheraton Shanghai Pudong in May/June? I saw one review from early April that sounded like the place was not ready to open, but was anyway.

Anybody know how close this place is to the St. Regis? I love the St. Regis, but the rates are pretty high and I'm looking for a lower cost SPG alternate in the Pudong area near Zhang-jiang.

As Fly Me to the Moon noted, this was posted in the wrong thread. Sorry!

2. The gyms are both fine - the weights on the fifth floor, and the cardio equipment on the third floor.
3. Service is fine, recognition of Plat good.
4. Breakfast in the lounge looks good, although somethings taste "greasy", although it is not in fact greasy.
5. The Spa offers 10% off for guests, so that pays for half of your tip. Headachy and jet-lagged, I had a treatment the afternoon I arrived, after a session in the gym and a shower. The price was high, but afterward my headache was gone, my muscles ached but in a good way, and after forcing down a dinner I was able to sleep until 5AM. The oil massage was excellent, the salt rub afterwards was fine (I am not a fan of that sort of thing), and the steam and shower afterwards was good. My muscles around my spine are still sore 24 hours later - that is a good massage.
6. Free internet, a la this post.
7. Room service prompt, food better than the Shanghai Hyatt.
8. The executive lounge has a big tank full of jellyfish - novel and interesting.
9. The price was slightly above average, but the location, as mentioned above, will literally save me hours on the daily transits to and from work.

I stayed two times at this property last week. My experience was excellent. Got upgraded to the suite. The room is divided into three separate rooms. Right side is the living room, includes desk, sofa, LCD TV, mini-bar. In the middle is a large bathroom, with two separate sinks, free-standing bath tub in the middle of the room, shower and toilet areas. The bedroom is on the left side. The bed is comfortable. The suite was very nice.

The lounge on 37th floor is excellent. It faces the river (Hunagpujiang). You can see the bund and the Pudong areas. At 6:30pm, the buildings lighted up. The view from the lounge was very nice. The lounge also has a nice selectioni of food and drinks.

Breakfast was served on 1st floor cafe. It was comp to plat. I don't know why the previous poster complained about the breakfast. To me, it's a very good breakfast, with many varieties. They have made-to-order noodles and eggs. The cafe has very interesting design. The food was spread at several corners, so you have to walk a bit to get the food.

We also tried the cafe for dinner. We ordered the south-east asian dishes and we were pleasantly surprised by the quality. They were excellent. Prices were very reasonable (CNY50-60). The restaurant was not busy and the waiters were very attentive. The lights at the cafes changes color with time, and provided interesting ambience.

I also stayed at the 4pts next door. Although I got upgraded to a suite, my stay was only so so. All the problems previous poster described for the Sheraton were gone. The hotel is totally ready for business. I can whole-heartedly recommend this place.

Thank you for the report.

I just booked a reward stay for December.

Dining close to Sheraton Shanghai Pudong

We will need to catch a plane in the morning at PVG. So I am thinking moving the stay the night before to this hotel, as the MagLev station does not look too far (not planning on walking over there though). But I am wondering if there are any good options for dining around the hotel, especially for breakfast. We may still do dinner at Puxi and just come back to the hotel for sleeping. But if there are also good dinner choices close by, that will be wonderful. Any suggestions are appreciated.

As I've pointed out in prior threads, the difference in driving time (to PVG) between the vast majority of the Pudong hotels discussed on FT and Jing'an is no more than 5 minutes.

That said, if you really, really want to stay over there (and don't want to cross the river for dinner), Suntory (in HSBC building) is one of my favorite restaurants in SH.

The hotel has a nice breakfast buffet, huge selection of food. It's comp to plat members so I don't know the price. I had dinner at the restaurant as well, decent food and very reasonable price. I think I paid about $12 for a set dinner, south east asian style. A local Chinese restaurant I can recommend is Sujiahui(苏家汇), next to St. Regis. It serves local Shanghainese fares and quality is excellent. The restaurant's setting is also nice. Price is middle range. There is a shopping area called Babaiban (八百伴). There are many shops and restaurants in this area, catering to the locals. If you want steak, I can recommend Wang Steak. The cooking style came from Taiwan, not the typical American steak you would expect. They have a website that you can check out. It's a 5-10 min taxi ride from Sheraton Pudong.

I can second that. Stayed there last night and the suite I was upgraded to as a Platinum was fab. The hotel is very stylish (think Westin), with lots of modern art. Impressive view in the lounge. Highly reccomended if your work place is in Pudong.
