We're doing 2 in Dubrovnik and 5 in Split in July. But I figure we'll be doing a bunch of day trips during the Split leg. No SPG in DBV unfortunately

I think 5 days is really a lot for Split. You may want to spend 3 in Split and 2 in Zadar for a little change of scenery?

Or if you don't mind driving a bit the scenery in Istria is stunning and definitely worth a visit.

Dubrovnik has a nice Hilton if you like chain hotels although I typically choose to stay in non-Interntaional chain hotels in Croatia as there are many good independent options- I do recommend however the LM Split as it is a wonderful hotel as long as you don't mind being 20 minutes out of town by car.

You can't beat the Hilton Dubrovnik for location! I have a trip report on our stay there in the Hilton forum.

Highly recommend getting out on the water - either sailing in Hvar, Korcula, or even an excursion from Split (bookable from the travel agency in the Marina) - which could include a "fish picnic." Also, day trips from Podstrana could include Krca Lakes (an easy day trip and drive).

I completely agree with the water recommendation. Stunning. Even better in July/August when it is hot enough to swim (the water is quite cold in the spring and fall). Much cleaner water for swimming than either Italy or France.

Just one piece of advice for the Zagreb stay - avoid the Sheraton!! The Westin is where you want to be (if you're wedded to SPG like I am). Same price - but a huge difference!

Thanks for the reco - agreed, 5 days is a lot, but that 5th night is free w/points so taking advantage of it (I'm sure we would have been fine with 3 or 4). We'll have a car so planning on doing plenty of driving (in addition to boat rides) - thus the LM isn't any issue.

Doing a local hotel in Dubrovnik that looks nice...Hilton and some of the other high-end ones are over $400, no thanks.

Since you have a car, and some free time, I'd also highly recommend KRKA National Park (if you're in to that sort of thing).

I wasn't, until I got there. It's stunning!

Thanks much, appreciate all the great recommendations!

One somewhat dumb question about the hotel - is there an actual casino in the hotel, or is that just a descriptor like the Catalina Casino in CA?

There is a Casino in the basement- it is quite small although I suppose if someone really wants to gamble it is there for them. I have never seen many customers heading down there- from the road you will see a large sign on the roof of one of the buildings for the Casino.

Which one? The Excelsior was fantastic when I stayed there, and only ~220 USD a night for a seaview room w/ balcony.

As TRAVELSIG said! It's a real casino, and nicely decorated etc, but it's tiny. Definitely enough fun to go play a few hands, but not somewhere you'll easily spend all night. It's very quiet, and on the same level as another bar / dance area (not really a club).

P.S. If you've never been to this hotel, just wait until you walk into the lobby and look left. It's breath-taking! Many great times here!

I enjoy a good casino, so I imagine I'll check it out at some point

Excelsior, Hilton...couple others that are the highest rated ones on TA. They were all $400+. Of course, this is early July so close to peak travel season (and also Fri/Sat night).
