Saw this and thought I'd reply that Mr. Kipper's stay was pretty lousy, from quality of the room to all of the charges, and to add insult to injury, his points didn't post and it took ages to have them posted after the request.

I agree. I've been four times and will be back again in March. Other than the military, the island's economy is based on tourism. Most locals work in the service industry for Federal minimum wage. I will say they're some of the nicest people I've ever met. I wouldn't recommend Guam unless you have to go there though.

Anyway, my sources tell me the Marriott has not been renovated.

PS ~ I always stay at the Hilton.

I stayed at the Guam Marriott in October 2011 and enjoyed my stay.

It is true that the property is older and is in need of a renovation, however the staff, location and views made up for that for me.

I had a really nice room that overlooked the ocean with a huge corner balcony. Everything worked fine in the room, it was a little dated, but it had a nice island feel to it. The woman at the concierge lounge was exceptionally friendly and helpful, she made you feel very welcome. Free alocholic drinks were served from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. with appetizers each night in the concierge lounge.

The pool area is a little old, but again the staff there were very nice and made any issues seem to disapear.

I agree that the local buildings in Guam are pretty run down and do not look so good. However, I would encourage anyone who is interested in going to Guam to definitely go. I LOVED flying Continental Micronesia from Honolulu to Guam and from Honolulu to Tokyo in Business class.

The Hyatt Regency Guam is much newer and I stayed there one night too. I would say that if you can afford the Hyatt Regency, go for that, but if you want a reasonably priced ocean front resort, the Marriott is a very good value for the price.

The Marriott has a mix of guests from the USA, Japan and other countries, the Hyatt Regency mostly had guests from Japan.

Avoid renting from Dollar Rent a Car in Guam, they have very old cars ( 2005 to 2007 Toyota Yaris's ). Hertz has much newer and better equipped cars and SUV's at reasonable rates and very good service. If you have the time, definitely rent a car and do not hesitate to drive around the island so that you can really see Guam.

I would like to add Guam to a trip to Hawaii again in the near future, that is how much I liked it!

I'm going back in March. I'm staying at the Hilton but will run over to the Marriott to check on the renovation status.

I was there in July 2012. Posts are correct that the hotel does look older, especially the exterior which needs powerwashing/cleaning and repainting on all of the concrete structures.

Interior of the hotel was dated but kept in clean and functional condition. As mentioned, the lounge provided complimentary beverages during the happy hour, as well as breakfast in the morning and some snacks after. I was upgraded to a high floor corner with huge balcony overlooking the pool and beach/bay.

Pool area can use some renovation, especially the walkways since the concrete is rough and you have to be careful where you walk. Pool is pretty large and deep and generally in good condition and there is a nice bar and lunch area. It would need more lounge seating around the pool if busy, but there was almost nobody there on my visit.

The hotel also provided free shuttle service from/to the airport for Plats. You'll have to arrange it in advance.

I was there in October 2012 for 3 nights. Yes, the rooms are slowly being renovated, very slowly. On Check in they asked if I would like a corner suite or one of the renovated rooms on the 12th floor. I got the impression that none of the suites at the time I stayed had been renovated.

I took the renovated King on the 12th floor and I saw one other room on the fl under construction. Basically, the renovated room had fresh paint but I really could not tell anything else as the furniture was well used and it look like the carpet was not new.

However, I did enjoy my stay and they offered your choice of breakfast down in the restaurant / buffet or ex lounge. I took the restaurant choice and it was very good. Also, the pool side cafe for afternoon snacks and drinks was nice as well.

I was on a points stay and I am a plat.

P.S., shuttle to and from the airport provided free of charge for plats not sure if they charge if you are a gold for this service.

GROSS hotel

Was there in October. Hotel was absolutely disgusting. Can't believe that Marriott has its name on the building. A renovation would require a total redo - including the exterior facilities.

The Hilton or Westin are far nicer.

I'm a Platinum Premier and would rather pay for drinks and breakfast than go back to that lounge or that hotel.

That being said, the staff was awesome. (Facility was really that bad!)

Ditto, staff very attentive... But the rooms are horrible.
