Marriott App now asking for tips….
I think I had a strong “just say no” when I read this article. The whole tipping thing - which really feels like employers doing a slight of hand price increase - is far out of control:

No, thank you, I am already paying the hotel enough to cover their cost of labour. They should rather consider lowering their profit margins.

You can treat it the same way you do with tipping on Uber or any number of apps. Tip if you want or feel generous. Ignore if you don’t.

And in other places I can easily ignore that option unless I genuinely want to tip.

Tip a penny. Show your dissatisfaction and run up the costs until they abandon it.
Marriott is a business that has said we're the product. We should have a similar mentality and treat everything as transactional and maximize our benefits within the rules of their system.

As long as it’s not more pushy than that, I don’t mind.

This is the standard in cruising too. It's incredibly annoying to me because it should all be factored in.

I was on a cruise not too long ago, and standard (the generally suggested) tips were included in the cruise price. There were no tipping envelopes in the room.
I view these tips the same way that I view restaurants which add a tip to my check. As the linked article says, this is nothing more than the owner trying to offload part of its labor cost to the customer. I don't patronize restaurants which add automatic tips to the check. I don't mind a hotel or restaurant providing a tipping by QR code option. However, I will not patronize a business which tries to enforce mandatory tipping.
