Qualifying for Marriott points through AMEX booking

Hey there.

Has anyone had experience booking a Marriott hotel on AMEX points, and still receiving full marriott poo units and nights?

I was told booking through the Chase travel portal, you do not qualify, as Expedia does the booking and its 3rd party.

But if I use AMEX points on their portal, is that also considered 3rd party to Marriott?

I don’t have direct experience for Marriott in such a scenario but Amex bookings are handled by Expedia and I’ve read about issues encountered getting hotel benefits/points for bookings through AMEX as they show up as Expedia on the hotel end. It’s best to book direct to avoid issues.

its a mixed bag if you book the room under Fine Hotels and Resorts (some get the points and elite nights while some dont, its really YMMV. No consistent msg from Marriott on this). As for bookings under regular Amex Travel, the answer is definitely no as the booking is made under Expedia which is an OTA (you will get points and elite nights if you book through third party full service travel agencies).

That I think is what I was asking. If these were Expedia bookings or what. Sounds like the regular travel portal is and then the fine hotels are a mixed bag.

I wish amex wouldnt make their own Expedia for internal purposes and fix this. Amex would be king if they could do that.

I see that Amex Travel US site clearly states in the Terms and Conditions that "Online travel agency Service Providers include Expedia, Inc. (“OTA”), which is a business organized and operating in the United States that has been selected by us to provide you with the ability to search for and book certain travel services."

However I'm unable to find such statements on the Amex Travel Canada site. Anyone knows who is the provider in Canada?

I vaguely recall that if you book FHR rates online in Canada, it books via Expedia in the back end. The booking confirmation will show Expedia as the supplier.

If you want to get your Marriott Bonvoy benefits and earn points/nights, you will need to call in and ask the AMEX Platinum agent to book it in Sabre and ask for the Marriott confirmation. Note that some agents don't know how to properly enter Marriott Bonvoy numbers correctly and simply add it to the "remarks" field in the Sabre PNR (this doesn't "transmit" to Marriott). They need to enter /ID-XXXXXXXXX with XXXXXXXXX being your Bonvoy number as part of the "sell" request.

Once you get the Marriott confirmation number, you can look it up on the Marriott website and add your Marriott Bonvoy number if it is not already in the booking.

For a very recent Candian data point (yesterday), if you book a Marriott FHR its added to your Marriott account instantly. For prepaid bookings it shows the amount paid for pay at hotel bookings, it just shows $0 but the rate is still Amex FHR.

could you clarify this? are you saying that you want to pay for the hotel stay with amex points, AKA "membership rewards" points? or are you sayinjg on the amex travel website?

you should be able to pay charges to your card with points at 1cpp. a $100 charge would thus be 10,000 points. at least those are the rates here in canada. so you could book at marriott.com and use your amex to pay. when the charge appears on your account, you just use the "pay with points" feature.

Does the AMEX travel agent- anywhere in the world- eg USA, Canada, UK, Europe etc- have the ability to book a hotel in such a way for full status benefits and earning points- at least for Marriott family of ho

I called the AMEX Canada travel agent today.
What she said made no sense.

She first said that AMEX Canada uses its own travel booking service.
I then asked her if AMEX Canada uses SABRE as its GDS for booking. She said yes
She said that through this booking, I would get full benefits- points credit, all benefits of elite status.
But then she said that the bookings information are stored in expedia.

I totally got lost at this point what she was saying.

I say this because a few months ago, I booked a hotel booking (different hotel chain than the Marriott family of hotels)- a refundable rate.
She AMEX travel agent reassured me I would get full credit for points and benefits.
Twenty four hours later- no booking on that hotel chain web site.
I went back to the same travel agent- she called the hotel directly to see what was going on.
She found out that the booking would not get me any benefits
.
So I cancelled the booking and booked directly with the hotel - to be able to receive full benefits and credit for the night stayed.
