Has anyone had experience booking a Marriott hotel on AMEX points, and still receiving full marriott poo units and nights?

I was told booking through the Chase travel portal, you do not qualify, as Expedia does the booking and it’s 3rd party.

But if I use AMEX points on their portal, is that also considered 3rd party to Marriott?
