Residence Inn Berkeley, CA [Master Thread]
Couldn't find anything, but figured since this is a brand new hotel. New high-rise Residence Inn just opened in Berkeley (Dec 2021). The location is great - 1 block away from campus, 1 block away from the subway station, and on one of downtown Berkeley's main dining/nightlife streets.
No stay because I'm local to the area, but I took a peek inside - looks like a pretty high standard new format Residence Inn. There's apparently going to be a rooftop bar opening in a month or two, still getting fitted out. Berkeley has been really short on hotel space compared to its neighbors, and given the proximity of the university, I imagine the hotel will be doing well during sporting events/conferences/alumni things and so on.

Well, occupancy must be terrible because they are now advertising the RI as student housing.

For awhile, the University of Tampa housed students in the Four Points Westshore (originally an Embassy Suites).
Separately, are there any good Four Points hotels in the chain? Every single Four Points listing I've ever looked up, and the one I've stayed at, aren't worthy of being in the Marriott family.

This is pretty common for long term stay hotels to book by the month. And at the nightly rate they are asking, they are definitely charging a premium for being so close to the campus.

Wonder what they are charging and if anyone will take them up on it.

I stayed there Sat - Thurs a few weeks ago, middle of October, and it was pretty full. I am not a student. Nice breakfast if you like bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs and potatoes, yogurt and waffles. No cut fruit, Not much fresh fruit, but excellent breakfast staff.
There is a rooftop bar but any noise did not enter my room. Card reader inside door to turn on room power. I put a business card in there. One day a housekeeper pulled it out. At least in the room I had, this cuts power to the Microwave oven and the oven cannot be used until the clock is set. Hopefully, it was just my room that was wired that way. Bedroom TV was too close to a closet to access HDMI ports on left side of TV. Living room TV had accessible HDMI ports and nearby power outlet and I was able to use my Firestick.
The TV's have ability to enter your streaming service credentials but I prefer not to do so.
This was my first time in Berkeley since this hotel opened. I guess I'll go back to the Four Points in Emeryville or the Oakland Marriott if RI becomes student housing and its obtrusive. The CY Emeryville is a Sonesta now.

It's also very risky in Berkeley to let a guest stay more than 14 days, as you then become subject to Rent Board oversight.

Rates are stooopid there. I expect that there are quite a few long term contracted rates guests for visiting faculty and other guests of Cal.

My rooms have been spacious. So spacious that there was plenty of room to move the couch 90 degrees to place it in front of the TV instead of against a wall.

Came here to say that UC has now purchased the hotel instead of just leasing some of it for student housing. Article says they will continue to operate it as a hotel.

"While a spokesman for the UC Investments arm declined to comment on the purchase, Berkeley sources familiar with the plan said the university would continue to operate it as a full-service hotel with the same management and business model currently in place. "
