FYI when I just did a search using both Firefox and Chrome the box for including taxes/fees was not checked. The rates showing were base room rates. When I checked the box the rates changed to include taxes/fees. I'm doing this from home in Seattle WA. So from what i see nothing has changed.

If I missed a more recent post than yours already saying this, my apologies. The thread has taken a bit of a turn since you posted this.

Eh, airlines were forced to advertise all-in costs a number of years ago, and that hasn't stopped them from having significant portions of the fare as don't-call-it-fuel surcharges. And while some programs collect the surcharges on award tickets, others do not. I'd expect similar from hotel programs over time.
One interesting tidbit I read in an article today about the Marriott settlement with PA was that the internal Marriott policy was that the amenities included in the resort fee had be worth more in aggregate than the fee. Now, not sure how they would price something like pool access/towel service, so maybe it's a hollow policy, but at least it seems like there was some consumer-friendly thought behind it.

Completely agree, it would be naive to expect anything more than this imo

It’s already the case that some hotel programs don’t have these scam fees applicable to award bookings while others do. So that’s not a migration from what has been the case for quite some time and remains so.

Airline fuel surcharges applicable to passenger airline tickets aren’t as widely post-initial search mandatory fees, except perhaps in the case of some airline programs’ award searches. For most major airlines and OTAs which I use, fuel surcharges are less of a late-in-the-booking process surprise than these hotel scam fees are.

True, I'm in Canada so I was starting to think that might be it until I saw Westcoaster's post.

Now it's starting to look like a Marriott IT issue. Shocking, I know.

I’m currently at The Dalmar in FLL on a two night points stay and when I booked, it showed a total of $33.90, which was for the annoying $15 per night resort fee plus tax. I’m here to see family and barely on property other than to sleep but decided not to switch to a different hotel.

I just received my folio and it’s a very surprising $117.15. They’ve added on state and local taxes and I don’t even know what amount these are based on, since there’s no room rate.

I don’t recall ever being charged taxes like this on a points stay but I’ve also never booked a property with a resort fee before.

Is this a new “enhancement?” Or have I just not experienced this before? Because being charged over a hundred bucks when I was expecting a third of that seems a little bait and switch.

Best way to figure it out is to ask the front desk (escalate to a manager if need be) before leaving the property.

Something is wrong.

Your confirmation email should have given you the all in price. If the hotel is deviating from that, stand your ground and say you’ll pay what was on the email.

Points stays shouldn't have taxes - I've had a couple of the sub-$5 city or convention fees show up before, but they always appear at booking. Check your confirmation email as well as your rate listing in the Marriott app.

On another note, the all-in pricing really is a game-changer. It seriously improves my search and rate comparison process. It also psychologically makes resort fees less of an issue since they were in the price I was originally comparing.

Thanks, everyone, for your input. I spoke to the manager and he confirmed it was a mistake and the folio was corrected.

Has anyone noticed that the resort fees have stayed the same or gotten somewhat smaller whilst parking fees have skyrocketed? Parking fees aren't shown on Marriott's website on any of the hotels using the new template. Only when you go to book and go to Summary of Charges can you see the parking fees.

Hi KRSW,

Hotel parking fees should be shown on the hotel website landing page if you scroll down to Hotel Information.

Thanks,

Marriott Bonvoy Lurker Robert, thank you for that, but there are some hotels out there which don't show this information. Off the top of my head, the Ritz-Carlton Orlando wasn't showing it earlier. There were a few others I've come across in the past few weeks.

We found Valet parking fee was listed on Hotel Policies, Hotel Overview page of The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes website.

You may check with us if you find there’s no parking fee information listed on hotel website in the future.

Please let us know if you need further assistance.

Has anyone else had success with the front desk removing part of the resort fee with the wifi being mentioned as part of the resort fee with platinum status?

checked in and front desk associate looked at me like I had two heads and then said, “well you get enhanced wifi”. I tried to reminder her that is part of my benefits not part of my resort fee but she wasn’t budging.
