I think a lot of people are failing to realize is that their 2020 status was earned in 2019 when it was business as usual. There were no extenuating circumstances in 2019 "out of their control." If they failed to execute the requirements for their elite qualification at par or higher than that held then their staus dropped in 2020 as it would in any other year. With the current crisis many believe their 2018 earned status should be extended into 2021.

I was Titanium until they updated statuses for 2020 a few days ago, and am now Platinum. This means that my new Platinum status would be extended through 2021. It doesn't mean I would be Titanium in 2020...that serves no purpose in a time when travel is barely allowed. The thought behind all this is that extending your earned status through next year will retain customers when travel is back to normal later this year or early next year.

Just saw what Air NZ is doing for their elites, and the idea makes sense as a way both not to punish those whose travel was stopped and yet to also reward those still traveling and staying at Marriotts.
Make 2020 a "banked year." Everyone's status earned in 2019 for 2020 would be carried over for another year. But, your 2020 activity (at least during the crisis) would be banked and could be used in any future year when you are short stays for elite status. For example, based on your 2019 activity you earned Plat status for 2020. Then, you only stayed 15 nights in 2020. You are Plat through 2021 anyway. In 2021 you stay 25 nights. You could then use your banked 15 nights to earn Plat for 2022.

Yes there are, which is confusing. Even the thread title indicates the discussion is for 2021 qualification. To be perfectly clear, this thread is about extending the status you earned for 2020 (for stays during 2019) through 2021.
I was Titanium until they updated statuses for 2020 a few days ago, and am now Platinum. This means that my new Platinum status would be extended through 2021. just received an email from Hilton, which does 2 status extension.
It seems that I will be gold for another year or two years? I can’t understand what it really says.
now what will Marriott do?
- 2019 Status Extension. All members whose 2019 status was scheduled to be downgraded on March 31, 2020—whether it’s Diamond, Gold or Silver—will automatically receive an extension through March 31, 2021.
- 2020 Status Extension. We are extending your 2020 member status through March 31, 2022. This means you will continue to enjoy all the Diamond, Gold or Silver benefits you have access to today for the next 24 months.
now what will Marriott do?

It is frustrating Marriott not saying yet what is going to happen with membership status etc. I've just had an email cancelling 3 forthcoming bookings as the hotel is now having to close. Between the start of March and the end of May, I've had 12 nights worth of accommodation cancelled (either the hotel doing it or me because things have cancelled) - that might not seem a lot to some, but I am a leisure traveller and this period of time is when I bank a lot of nights as I don't do too many over the summer months. I'll be glued waiting to hear what happens once things settle down.

HILTON HAS EXTENDED EARNED ELITE STATUS TO MARCH 2022.
It’s on their official website under COVID-19 response.
Hopefully Marriott does the same!

I was due to drop from Hilton Gold to Silver April 1st. Now, I'll have Gold through March 2021. If I had stayed enough in 2019 to keep Gold, then I would have it through March 2022.

I guess this is quite apart from the soft landing I was expecting, but I'll take if offered. I would prefer Titanium over Platinum and current Gold anyway. Hopefully their IT can cope?

Just got the Hilton email too. I don't see how Marriott has much choice but to match. I'll continue to stay at both Marriott and Hilton next year regardless, since I'm LT Plat. But if I didn't have LT, I'd probably tilt more stays to Hilton.

To be fair, in the states, you can just get a credit card and BOOOM, instant Hilton Diamond or Gold.
So extending Hilton status is nowhere near a big deal as extending Marriott status, at least for those in US.
I for one wait with bated breath for Marriott to extend my status through 2021 when I can travel again. Got Hawaii booked in March!

The main issue I see is that they are likely going to have to offer status extensions at the end of 2020 for 2021 as well. Unless things improve drastically quite soon which is unlikely we will have a very abbreviated 2020 qualification period.
