This thread refers to the various Marriott brands within a specific geographic area. Marriott Bonvoy hotels in XX usually have posts asking which property is better, etc. Trip reports are usually better suited in the property specific threads.

Can someone who knows list the names of the hotels here in this long thread? Here are the names, addresses, email contact, commonly used abbreviations and some basic info about each hotel. (Location information, CL and breakfast information, UG experiences reported within the thread, typical room layout and frequently mentioned basic advice for different properties.) Keep in mind most posts indicate these are all great hotels. Hope this helps. CJK
  • JW Marriott Hotel Bangkok (JW) 4 Sukhumvit Road, Soi 2, Bangkok 10110, Thailand between the Phloen Chit and Nana BTS Stations. There is a pretty large CL. Elites mostly report having complimentary breakfast offered only at the CL and not in a restaurant. Some are bothered by the hotel's proximity to the Nana district and think the hotel may get some associated business while others (myself) have not really noticed this unless looking hard to see it. The hotel was recently renovated and there are a few posts showing pictures. UGs are usually to the club level regular room where the bathrooms are interior (no outside glass wall) and feature rather small showers but great soaking tubs. Unlike the other hotels listed here, the toilets are not in enclosures.
  • Renaissance Bangkok Ratchaprasong Hotel (Ren) 518/8 Ploenchit Road Khwaeng Lumphini, Khet Pathum Wan, Bangkok almost attached to the Chit Lom BTS Station and the SkyWalk. One can reach the platform without having to walk on public sidewalks and by using escalators/elevators in the building next door, so most feel this is the property with the fastest and easiest access to BTS. The CL is smaller than the JW's and sometimes gets full. Some elites report having a choice of the complimentary breakfast in the restaurant (which is quite good and huge) while others report having that request denied. Latest reports indicate the restaurant breakfast is offered as of April 2018. The hotel does not have many suites so UGs are usually to corner rooms which often have seating and/or dressing areas as well as larger bathrooms with full glass walls. IMO this is the best/most convenient hotel for a first timer looking to do typical touristy things in Bangkok.
  • Courtyard by Marriott Bangkok (CY) 155/1 Soi Mahadlekluang 1 Ratchadamri Road Bangkok is about a five minute walk to either the Ratchadamri or Chit Lom BTS Stations. The hotel operates tuk-tuks to/from the BTS Station. The hotel has a CL and consistently offers elites a choice of breakfast there or in the restaurant. The CL is on the top floor of the hotel and has outdoor seating. Having stayed at the hotel several times as a P, PP and LTP I have never been given an UG, so if there are others who can chime in on that please do. The regular room has a small interior only bathroom with a window overlooking the room and no tub, only a walk-in shower. IMO the price can makes this a great choice, as it is convenient to many places a visitor will go. Sometimes it can be half the price of other Marriott options and they often run double points promotions. (Call the hotel to ask, it cannot hurt.)
  • Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park (Sukhumvit Soi 22) 199 ถนน สุขุมวิท ซอย 22 Khwaeng Khlong Tan, Khet Khlong Toei, กรุงเทพมหานคร 10110, Thailand is about an eight minute walk to the Emporium Mall and Phrom Phong BTS Station either down the Soi sidewalk or through Queen's Park. The hotel operates a regular shuttle to the BTS Station although some have reported trouble catching it back to the hotel. The CL is large, with an outdoor deck, and most people report not being given a choice for the complimentary breakfast in the restaurant. Most Plats report getting UG to a suite, with the M Suite seeming to be most common. It has a living room, bedroom and single large interior bathroom with separate walk-in showers and tubs. This is the largest hotel in Bangkok.
  • Bangkok Marriott Hotel Sukhumvit (Sukhumvit Soi 57) 2 ถนน สุขุมวิท 57 Phra Khanong, Khlong Toei, กรุงเทพมหานคร 10110, Thailand ([email protected]) is a two minute walk to the Thong Lo BTS Station. Getting to the station involves crossing Thong Lo intersection which can be daunting. The hotel is about a ten minute BTS ride to the central malls, the Ren, etc. The area is a little quieter and more "Thai" than the more touristy/business area where the JW, Ren and CY are located. Some people report being able to have complimentary breakfast in the restaurant while others report lounge only. The CL is about the same size as the Ren's and can get crowded in the early evening. The hotel is on the higher floors of a 40+ story building and the CL is located on one of the top floors, offering stunning views of Bangkok. There is a rooftop bar on the top of the building with great views, too. Elites are often given a coupon for a free drink on the roof. Plats report mostly getting UGs to a two room suite with an extra half bath. The main bath includes an enclosed toilet, a single large walk-in shower and a large soaking tub that can easily seat two. (While the tub is large, the JW, Marquis and Ren tubs are more comfortable for a single person looking to lean back and relax.) IMO this is the quietest of the hotels listed here.
  • Bangkok Marriott Hotel The Surawongse 262 Thanon Surawong, Khwaeng Si Phraya, Khet Bang Rak, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon 10500, Thailand is the newest hotel. As of April 2018 there are not many posts from users who have stayed, nor is there an abbreviation being commonly used on this forum. The hotel is not attached/close to a BTS or MRT station but is near the Silom business area and some more popular adult entertainment establishments.

In fact, at the next BTS stop from the Suk 57 hotel location (Ekamai), there is Gateway Mall which has many fun things and food options for children and adults. In the other direction from the 57, one BTS stop (Phrom Phong) away, the EmQuartier Megamall (EM District) is a great place to spend with your family.

But the hotel is no longer “party central” and the area is not so sleazy these days. It is popular with a younger crowd, but most of them are tourists , not so much a night life focus. The majority are from East and South East Asia and India. The hotel has a good vibe these days.
Four Points: this area is rather bland rather than sleazy ( there is a Hooters next door but that’s a bit lamp/limp on the Bangkok night life scale). The hotel attracts a slightly older clientele and more families. It is closer to public transport. There is a back entrance to Soi 17, making an easier path to/from Terminal21 ( room key card required).
The pool at Four Points is a bit better for kids IMO ( the one at Aloft is tiny and a bit shaded); both offer reasonably priced kid-type food.
To add: much of the pavement along Sukhumvit is being renewed over the next few months. It’s still walkable but is not very nice.

If the poster does choose four points (which he should over Aloft) he can use the back exit to ge over to Terminal 21 and Asoke BTS/Sukhumvit MRT. While I wouldn't call 4P area to bad as far as seediness goes, on Sukhumvit in that area as another poster pointed out, there are working women at all times of the day almost. That actually isn't all that bad as far as children go as they might not even notice it, but there will be some sex toy tables set up on Suk at different times, so If that is something one doesn't want to subject one's children too, use that back exit always and don't take them on Sukhumvit or scope out the locations of those tables to avoid it. I haven't stayed at Courtyard yet, but would like to give that a try and it might be a good option for you. Just saw your son is 4, so I don't think it will matter much about the area you choose as far as seediness goes, what ever you are comfortable with. Four points has a great breakfast! One hour of happy hour 4pm - Midnight at the pool bar for Plat and above. Food is reasonable there too and can get the 20% discount for Plats. Curly fries, shrimp, satay all yummy.

I did stay at Aloft two times and I liked it too. With a four year old while 4P is probably better, if Aloft is much cheaper and you are looking for that, it would be perfectly fine if you don't mind a longer walk to the BTS. Soi 11 is improving a bit lately and there are several new restaurants just opened directly across from Aloft. The sidewalks actually look to be getting better in the area too as it seems like they are trying to build them more consistently throughout the area as best they can. A four year old won't remember much of whatever he sees anyway and It might be something he just remembers as tall buildings in a exotic place.

As others have mentioned Aloft is further along Soi 11 and in a more "vibrant" area that is more suited to a couple who want to experience secret cocktail bars (Havana Social, The Photo Booth) and the nightlife in the area.
While there is a Tuk Tuk service provided, depending on time of day it would be quicker to walk to or from the Hotel.

The Four Points is situated roughly half way between Nana and Asoke BTS station... Asoke does seems a lot closer but it is an illusion, yes I have counted out the steps one time when the matter was brought up on another forum
Terminal 21 is attached to Asoke BTS and Sukhumvit MRT is close by.

The Marriott Sukhumvit 57 is also a nice hotel in a "normal" are was it was put, but venture a street or so away and it too is either seedy or vibrant depending on how you view it.

Just realised you will be there during Songkran (13-15th) so expect to get wet, have a dry bag for phone, wallet etc.
If staying at Aloft I would expect the street during the day to be nothing but water fights, at least with Four Points you can use the back entrance to avoid getting too wet though if you plan it correctly back entrance to / from hotel and cut through Robinsons to the BTS will see a high chance of staying dry.

Thanks everyone for the insights! This thread got lively very quick! I cancelled my Aloft reservation and rebooked at 4 points. I think being near the BTS and malls will be very convenient. I HAD NO IDEA Songkran was exactly the dates we were going! LOL oh well at least it looks fun! Thanks for the backdoor tips, I'm sure it will come in handy. Are all the water fights happening throughout the day? Is everyone a target??

Also I got hit with the Extra person fee of like ~$198 for adding my son to the reservation, so I changed my reservation to just 2 people and will deal with it at check-in. Any other way around that fee?

Yes everyone is a target if in the area of the water parties on the street. Soi 11 gets crazy especially from a few of the open air bars on the street there. You didn't say what level of Status you have. When I was at Four Points I booked 2 rooms, and paid the extra person charge on the 2nd because it had three people/adults. I might have tried to avoid it, but I also got a breakfast rate for that room which was pretty good and I didn't want the people staying in the room to run in to any hassles. I think you are doing the right thing not paying for 3 people with your 4 year old as the 3rd. The policies on children often aren't very clear. I stayed at the Marriott in Hua Hin a few nights once and had two children in tow. During the reservation ran in to similar issues, but in the end it wasn't a problem for the young children to stay for free. That was a few years ago and policies/fees seem to be changing a little about the extra people though. What is your plan for breakfast? What is your status level with Marriott?

Hi I only have Marriott Gold Elite, I had a points balance of around 82,000 points so Aloft or 4 Points were our only options.

Not going to eat breakfast at the hotel? I ask because that might be the issue about your room and the 3rd person. Obviously if you bring a child to breakfast it will be noted. If you were Platinum and get the two free breakfasts then the 3rd might be a question. Gold and not going to breakfast, I think it would be ridiculous to pay or charge for your 4 year old in the room and you could ask for the charge to be removed.

maybe once or twice, since I'm not platinum I don't get free breakfast. Thankfully Terminal 21 is walking distance.

Using the back entrance to Four Points and cutting through Robinsons department store to get to the BTS and even over to Terminal 21 will keep relatively dry.
You will find the most people parking in Songkran in the streets / Soi's where plenty of bars are during the daytime, night the it seems to drop off.

Interesting about the extra person charge when adding a child.
I looked at same dates with 2 adults and 1 child and entered age as 4 then looked a at paid or points booking and no extra charge appeared, though I did not click through to the next page.
From memory a child under 12 is free and for breakfast is charged at 50% of full rate when they are under 4.... again I'm going by memory and it is not great at best of times

I am not sure you are aware but Terminal 21 as do the other malls, open at 10am and closes at 10pm.
Around midday the food court really starts to get busy and is hard to get a seat, the other restaurants are ok and you should get a seat quickly.

If you exit Four Points onto Soi 17 using the back entrance and go to Tops supermarket you will find a small food hall, which I believe is open 24 hours.. or is it only the supermarket open 24/7 and not the food hall, damn my memory

On the 5th floor of T21 is the food court in the back. You'll have to try it once or twice if you like decent LOW priced food. My favorites are in booth 1, Som Tom Salad and Larb Moo with sticky rice, then add the Mango/Rice at the end sometimes. Booth 2 or 3 has Hainan Chicken Rice which your son might like. One of my favorite meals in Bangkok.. Yum! A place called "After You" on the 2nd or 3rd floor has delicious desserts. Several choices but the one that is a big hit is some sort of mound of fine ice with flavors mixed in. It's so delicious and has a texture I hadn't had before. Melt in your mouth. They have branches at many of the big malls. Unless you like very hot food order some things Mai Phed which is basically no spicy. When I order that way at T21 it's perfect because there is still spice left in the mixing pot. Phed nid noi is supposed to mean "just a little" spicy. Enjoy and good luck.

Yeah I'm sure it's the supermarket open 24/7, food court was closed when I went in there after midnight. Foodland Supermarket on Soi 16 has an all night restaurant though. I like that sometimes for Chicken Basil and a few other things are good.

Soi 22 is very similar to Soi 15 in terms of "seediness," so I am at something of a loss why one of our members goes on and on about how wonderful MMQP is, but denigrates 4P for being in a "seedy" area.

MMQP is a convention property - the largest hotel in Bangkok, one of the largest in Asia. It has a very large lounge and they're pretty good with upgrades. Breakfast is lounge only. Pool is weak.

I have stayed at both and I can confidently tell you that there is really no comparison between the MMPQ and the 4P. The MMQP is light years ahead of the 4P! With ~$30 difference in rate, why not just stay at the WGS and save yourself the troubles! At least the WGS have a lounge (albeit a small one) and they are next door to T-21. Convention property or not, the MMQP is awesome. Let us examine the 4P:
  • The breakfast at the Eatery with limited options but ok.
  • No real upgrade possibility (Hardly any Platinum recognition)
  • Low rise so not really good views.
  • No club lounge so no real happy hour at the 4P. They give you one (or 2) beer and no food at all at their pub.
  • The hard product is weak as many FTers have complained about the 4P shower water pressure, the faulty faucet design (splash), and flood susceptibility after taking a shower.
  • Small rooftop pool (8th floor) but direct sun exposure.
  • They have tuk-tuk shuttle to the nearest BTS station and a back door if you want to avoid the seedy scene or the Indian tailors.

Tiny rooftop pool at the 4P as seen from the SGS

4P complimentary Tuk-Tuk shuttle

Room with a view - from room # 403 - shanty town next door!

Although they are not in the same league, let's compare the above to the MMQP:
  • Breakfast at lounge and if you have children, breakfast choice at a culinary experience Goji Restaurant.
  • Have 50 nights at the MMQP and I am at 100% upgrade rate to a suite.
  • 27th floor M-Club lounge with food and drinks all day. Happy hour offerings are great.
  • 8 dining outlets including 3 rooftop and another three where you can partake your happy hour benefits (Soba Factory, Siam Tea Room, and Pagoda Chinese Restaurant).
  • High rise towers with 40 floors, expansive views of Bangkok, and elegant hard product which renovations were completed in late 2016.
  • Huge pool on the 9th floor with an entire area for sun tanning.
  • Comped tuk-tuk shuttle to the nearest BTS station and a back door through Benjasiri Park if you want to avoid the seedy scene or the Indian tailors.

Kalboz family heading back to the MMQP through Benjasiri Park

The pool sun tanning area - the pool area takes up most of the 9th floor

Family breakfast at Goji - as I recall the OP is traveling with family & a child

Expansive views of Bangkok from the M-Club lounge with kind & professional staff member (note how happy we are to be there!)

Extensive spread at happy hour - M-Club lounge
