This thread refers to the various Marriott brands within a specific geographic area. Marriott Bonvoy hotels in XX usually have posts asking which property is better, etc. Trip reports are usually better suited in the property specific threads.

Can someone who knows list the names of the hotels here in this long thread? Here are the names, addresses, email contact, commonly used abbreviations and some basic info about each hotel. (Location information, CL and breakfast information, UG experiences reported within the thread, typical room layout and frequently mentioned basic advice for different properties.) Keep in mind most posts indicate these are all great hotels. Hope this helps. CJK
  • JW Marriott Hotel Bangkok (JW) 4 Sukhumvit Road, Soi 2, Bangkok 10110, Thailand between the Phloen Chit and Nana BTS Stations. There is a pretty large CL. Elites mostly report having complimentary breakfast offered only at the CL and not in a restaurant. Some are bothered by the hotel's proximity to the Nana district and think the hotel may get some associated business while others (myself) have not really noticed this unless looking hard to see it. The hotel was recently renovated and there are a few posts showing pictures. UGs are usually to the club level regular room where the bathrooms are interior (no outside glass wall) and feature rather small showers but great soaking tubs. Unlike the other hotels listed here, the toilets are not in enclosures.
  • Renaissance Bangkok Ratchaprasong Hotel (Ren) 518/8 Ploenchit Road Khwaeng Lumphini, Khet Pathum Wan, Bangkok almost attached to the Chit Lom BTS Station and the SkyWalk. One can reach the platform without having to walk on public sidewalks and by using escalators/elevators in the building next door, so most feel this is the property with the fastest and easiest access to BTS. The CL is smaller than the JW's and sometimes gets full. Some elites report having a choice of the complimentary breakfast in the restaurant (which is quite good and huge) while others report having that request denied. Latest reports indicate the restaurant breakfast is offered as of April 2018. The hotel does not have many suites so UGs are usually to corner rooms which often have seating and/or dressing areas as well as larger bathrooms with full glass walls. IMO this is the best/most convenient hotel for a first timer looking to do typical touristy things in Bangkok.
  • Courtyard by Marriott Bangkok (CY) 155/1 Soi Mahadlekluang 1 Ratchadamri Road Bangkok is about a five minute walk to either the Ratchadamri or Chit Lom BTS Stations. The hotel operates tuk-tuks to/from the BTS Station. The hotel has a CL and consistently offers elites a choice of breakfast there or in the restaurant. The CL is on the top floor of the hotel and has outdoor seating. Having stayed at the hotel several times as a P, PP and LTP I have never been given an UG, so if there are others who can chime in on that please do. The regular room has a small interior only bathroom with a window overlooking the room and no tub, only a walk-in shower. IMO the price can makes this a great choice, as it is convenient to many places a visitor will go. Sometimes it can be half the price of other Marriott options and they often run double points promotions. (Call the hotel to ask, it cannot hurt.)
  • Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park (Sukhumvit Soi 22) 199 ถนน สุขุมวิท ซอย 22 Khwaeng Khlong Tan, Khet Khlong Toei, กรุงเทพมหานคร 10110, Thailand is about an eight minute walk to the Emporium Mall and Phrom Phong BTS Station either down the Soi sidewalk or through Queen's Park. The hotel operates a regular shuttle to the BTS Station although some have reported trouble catching it back to the hotel. The CL is large, with an outdoor deck, and most people report not being given a choice for the complimentary breakfast in the restaurant. Most Plats report getting UG to a suite, with the M Suite seeming to be most common. It has a living room, bedroom and single large interior bathroom with separate walk-in showers and tubs. This is the largest hotel in Bangkok.
  • Bangkok Marriott Hotel Sukhumvit (Sukhumvit Soi 57) 2 ถนน สุขุมวิท 57 Phra Khanong, Khlong Toei, กรุงเทพมหานคร 10110, Thailand ([email protected]) is a two minute walk to the Thong Lo BTS Station. Getting to the station involves crossing Thong Lo intersection which can be daunting. The hotel is about a ten minute BTS ride to the central malls, the Ren, etc. The area is a little quieter and more "Thai" than the more touristy/business area where the JW, Ren and CY are located. Some people report being able to have complimentary breakfast in the restaurant while others report lounge only. The CL is about the same size as the Ren's and can get crowded in the early evening. The hotel is on the higher floors of a 40+ story building and the CL is located on one of the top floors, offering stunning views of Bangkok. There is a rooftop bar on the top of the building with great views, too. Elites are often given a coupon for a free drink on the roof. Plats report mostly getting UGs to a two room suite with an extra half bath. The main bath includes an enclosed toilet, a single large walk-in shower and a large soaking tub that can easily seat two. (While the tub is large, the JW, Marquis and Ren tubs are more comfortable for a single person looking to lean back and relax.) IMO this is the quietest of the hotels listed here.
  • Bangkok Marriott Hotel The Surawongse 262 Thanon Surawong, Khwaeng Si Phraya, Khet Bang Rak, Krung Thep Maha Nakhon 10500, Thailand is the newest hotel. As of April 2018 there are not many posts from users who have stayed, nor is there an abbreviation being commonly used on this forum. The hotel is not attached/close to a BTS or MRT station but is near the Silom business area and some more popular adult entertainment establishments.

But pretty much both, the 4P and Aloft, are located in a very seedy area of lower Sukhumvit. Go further! The Marriott Sukhumvit 57 has more or less the same distance from BTS (Thong Lo) as the 4P (Asok or Nana) in a "normal" neighborhood setting. In fact, at the next BTS stop from the Suk 57 hotel location (Ekamai), there is Gateway Mall which has many fun things and food options for children and adults. In the other direction from the 57, one BTS stop (Phrom Phong) away, the EmQuartier Megamall (EM District) is a great place to spend with your family.

Gateway Ekamai (April 2013) loads of fun for the kids

Four Points is not a seedy area by Bangkok standards. Especially not when compared to Aloft, which is a long walk down Soi 11 (which I would call moderately seedy, though not Soi Cowboy seedy).

Four Points is also extremely convenient to BTS and Terminal 21.

Pretty much from Sukhumvit 1 all the way past Asok (Sukhumvit 23) on both sides is a seedy area, sometimes even during daylight hours. True, some areas are better than others and thus 4P area not as bad as Soi 11, but at Sukhumvit 15 and Sukhumvit proper (Thermae and vicinity) is a meat shop! I am not judging anyone here as I could care less either way. I'm just giving the OP more information in order to make a better informed decision for himself of his family. Nothing wrong with providing fellow FTers with options.

Art of the deal between Sukhumvit 17-19 during daylight! (January 2017)

Terminal 21 mall is indeed very interesting (December 2011)

The main disadvantage of Aloft is the distance down Soi 11, particularly when travelling with children. They provide a tuk tuk service to Nana BTS and Terminal 21, but it’s a long walk back down 11 ( 10 minutes, maybe 800 metres).
But the hotel is no longer “party central” and the area is not so sleazy these days. It is popular with a younger crowd, but most of them are tourists , not so much a night life focus. The majority are from East and South East Asia and India. The hotel has a good vibe these days.
Four Points: this area is rather bland rather than sleazy ( there is a Hooters next door but that’s a bit lamp/limp on the Bangkok night life scale). The hotel attracts a slightly older clientele and more families. It is closer to public transport. There is a back entrance to Soi 17, making an easier path to/from Terminal21 ( room key card required).
The pool at Four Points is a bit better for kids IMO ( the one at Aloft is tiny and a bit shaded); both offer reasonably priced kid-type food.
To add: much of the pavement along Sukhumvit is being renewed over the next few months. It’s still walkable but is not very nice.

Was recently at Four Points and really enjoyed it. They do have a very shallow pool section that would be good with children. The pool area wasn't all that busy either. If the poster does choose four points (which he should over Aloft) he can use the back exit to ge over to Terminal 21 and Asoke BTS/Sukhumvit MRT. While I wouldn't call 4P area to bad as far as seediness goes, on Sukhumvit in that area as another poster pointed out, there are working women at all times of the day almost. That actually isn't all that bad as far as children go as they might not even notice it, but there will be some sex toy tables set up on Suk at different times, so If that is something one doesn't want to subject one's children too, use that back exit always and don't take them on Sukhumvit or scope out the locations of those tables to avoid it. I haven't stayed at Courtyard yet, but would like to give that a try and it might be a good option for you. Just saw your son is 4, so I don't think it will matter much about the area you choose as far as seediness goes, what ever you are comfortable with. Four points has a great breakfast! One hour of happy hour 4pm - Midnight at the pool bar for Plat and above. Food is reasonable there too and can get the 20% discount for Plats. Curly fries, shrimp, satay all yummy.

I did stay at Aloft two times and I liked it too. With a four year old while 4P is probably better, if Aloft is much cheaper and you are looking for that, it would be perfectly fine if you don't mind a longer walk to the BTS. Soi 11 is improving a bit lately and there are several new restaurants just opened directly across from Aloft. The sidewalks actually look to be getting better in the area too as it seems like they are trying to build them more consistently throughout the area as best they can. A four year old won't remember much of whatever he sees anyway and It might be something he just remembers as tall buildings in a exotic place.

As a regular at Four Points I would recommend it over Aloft, I'll be checking in on the day you check out
As others have mentioned Aloft is further along Soi 11 and in a more "vibrant" area that is more suited to a couple who want to experience secret cocktail bars (Havana Social, The Photo Booth) and the nightlife in the area.
While there is a Tuk Tuk service provided, depending on time of day it would be quicker to walk to or from the Hotel.

The Four Points is situated roughly half way between Nana and Asoke BTS station... Asoke does seems a lot closer but it is an illusion, yes I have counted out the steps one time when the matter was brought up on another forum
Terminal 21 is attached to Asoke BTS and Sukhumvit MRT is close by.

The Marriott Sukhumvit 57 is also a nice hotel in a "normal" are was it was put, but venture a street or so away and it too is either seedy or vibrant depending on how you view it.

Just realised you will be there during Songkran (13-15th) so expect to get wet, have a dry bag for phone, wallet etc.
If staying at Aloft I would expect the street during the day to be nothing but water fights, at least with Four Points you can use the back entrance to avoid getting too wet though if you plan it correctly back entrance to / from hotel and cut through Robinsons to the BTS will see a high chance of staying dry.

Did you purposely choose the Songkran holiday to visit Thailand? If not, oh boy......

(Four Points > Aloft for family with small child.)

If you stay at the Grand Hyatt, you don't even have to leave the hotel! I wonder how many other normal places in Bangkok are filled with girls which I'm too oblivious to notice are working.

This is a topic better suited to the Thailand forum than the Marriott Bonvoy thread.

Article in 2nd link says the 2 hotels will open in 2021. BKK has a lot of Bonvoy properties & certainly getting more

Cheers.

Indeed. If TAT has it right in the projection that tourist arrivals will increase to 60million within a few years ( currently 38 million?), then the demand will be there. I was a doubter when they said, not all that long ago, that the target was 30 million. Whether Bangkok will remain habitable is another matter, particularly in the light of the appalling air quality over the past few weeks/months

The more rooms in Bangkok, the better possibility that rates will remain reasonable for the the foreseeable future

I prefer the Aloft to the 4P. I always seem to find a BRG for the Aloft and never for 4P which has something to do with it and I have always found the atmosphere at the 4P a bit meh. I also enjoy walking even in the heat. I was actually disappointed that there has been so much redevelopment along Soi 11 it is getting bland whereas there was lots of interest previously. I agree that Soi 11 during Songkran is not a place to be.

It will be interesting to see where they price Moxy rooms. I stayed at the Moxy near Heathrow last year and it was fine, especially at half the price of the Sheraton Skyline and others of the same ilk. At Heathrow, it's over in a neighborhood near T4.

Pricing and categorization will be interesting. In Tokyo, the Moxy is typically the cheapest Bonvoy option by rate. However, the hotel has the same category as the two CYs (Cat 5). In Tokyo, the hotel categories are very top heavy, whereas you find more low and mid categories in BKK. So it'll be interesting to see how the Moxy will fit in.
