Taste of Gold/Platinum
You are given gold/platinum status for 90 days, and you must complete a certain number of nights/stays to retain that status for the remainder of the year plus the following year. This promotion is targeted only.

Road to Gold/Platinum (a.k.a. Gold/Platinum Challenge)
Currently, this will allow you to move up one level with a shortened stay criteria. You have 90 days to complete 6/9 stays to receive Gold/Platinum status. If you do no qualify, you are eligible to start another challenge one year and one day after the 90th day of the challenge you just did. When you sign up, the MR CSR should tell you the date you are eligible to do another challenge.

FAQ

Q: What qualifies as a stay?
A: One paid night at a Marriott-brand (including Ritz-Carlton Hotels) hotel. Cash+points rate does not qualify. SPG hotels does not qualify (as of 03/2017). Some exclusions may apply, someone please help fill this in.

Q: Can I simply book multiple, consecutive one-night stays at the same hotel?
A: No.

Q: Can I jump between multiple Marriotts in the area?
A: Yes. As long as you book at least one night at each property. Special care must be taken if the Marriott properties are next to each other. They may share the same back-office. While you may book one night at each property on consecutive nights, which should count as two stays, it may only count as one stay. A call to Marriott Rewards should split them up correctly.

Q: Can I book multiple nights at different properties for the same night to get multiple stay credits?
A: No. Regardless how many different places you book for the same night, it all counts as one stay.

Q: Can I sign up for both Gold and Platinum Challenges at the same time?
A: No. Only one challenge per year.

Q: I'm Silver, can I do the Platinum challenge?
A: No. This is only a one-level promotion. You are only eligible for the Gold challenge.

Q: Can a non-elite do the Gold Challenge
A: No. Must be Silver.

Q: I just completed my 6th/9th stay. When should I see my new status?
A: Good job! Your new status should appear after your 6th/9th stay posts to your account.

Q: Can I book a meeting to get a stay credit?
A: No. You will only receive 10 night credits, not a stay credit.

I called the MR Gold line to sign up for a Gold Challenge but asked to check when my Gold would expire (since I'm at the mid-30s in elite nights this year). Was pleasantly surprised to be told that corporate had reviewed my account recently (as others on this board had mentioned) and given me Gold through end of Jan2013. I asked how this happened and the answer was similar to what others have told (reviewed usage and perhaps over the past 3 years?).

BTW, like others in another thread, I did have that one day about a monght ago on the MR website where it flashed a message that said something like: congrats, you are renewed for Gold (or something like that). But that message went away after one day. So, that probably was when they reviewed the account?

In case others are wondering about my earlier question, the rep did note that Ritz stays count toward the gold/plat challenge nights (any paid stays at Ritz or Marriott brands count).

It seems like the current variant of MR came into being in the late 1990's. I remember one or two stays early in my travel life in something called "Marriott Marquis" (I think). But I know by the time I was using Execustay regularly (1997), I was earning MR points.

They hadn't yet formalized the 2.5 pts/$ or the 0.33 EQN for Execustay, but I seem to recall that we were comped a flat Gold status and given something like 5,000 pts/month as part of our specific contract. We were using them for about 20 units in a high-cost city...they were something like $2,200 per apartment...so almost in line with today's earning level.

I think your are correct. Before this time, Marriott had one program from their FS hotels (Marriott Honored Guest) and different programs for their non-FS hotels (FFI Club, CY Club, maybe others as well.) In the late 90's I think they consolidated all their various programs into one company wide program. At the time I had lifetime CY Club Gold membership and they used to send me free breakfast and free suite upgrade coupons all the time.^

I started a Platinum Challenge a few days ago on the 4th, the day I checked in for a 9-night stay. At check-in, the desk indicated I did not show as Platinum but when I explained I was on a challenge that started that day I was given lounge access. I finally had time to check my on-line profile today and it still shows me as a Silver.

My question, for someone who has had a challenge recently, did your profile show you as Platinum during your challenge? I just need to know whether I need to call in because something has gone haywire.

Thanks in advance.

Yes it should say you are Plat. I told my co-worker to call up and request the challenge and the last hotel we checked into they saw his Plat status.

when I did a gold challenge I checked into a FS Marriott the day after it started and the status didn't show up in the computer, but I went to the internet terminal in the lobby and printed my account status page to show them I was gold. If it's not showing up online after a couple days I would definitely call.

First of all, yes, it can take several days for your new (provisional) status to filter in and get to the hotel and the website, during normal times. So I'm not surpirsed that the hotel couldn't see your new status when you did the challenge the very day you checked in.

However, regarding the website, something has indeed gone haywire, and it's affecting a lot more than just you and a lot more than just challanges and it's a yearly event:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/marri...ock-reset.html

The whole Marriott Rewards site is temporarily a little chronogically out of whack, telling everyone how many stays they've had in 2011 as how many stays they've had "this year".

So perhaps it won't be able to show you any new status online until they get that resolved (expected in the next week or two per other threads)?

If the MR rep enters the challenge information correctly, Marriott gives you the benefit of the doubt that you will make it and be award the status of your challenge. I think it shows in the system usually within a day or two.

I earned Platinum for 2010 and 2011 but come 29 nights short for 2012. They let me keep my status anyway as a courtesy. I wasn't worried, though, because once you're Platinum, you can keep it forever really. All you have to do is pay 40k points a year to keep your status. The hard part is earning Platinum once, but once you do, you're pretty much good to go for as long as you ahve 40k points to cash in.

Hell, you didn't even make GOLD for 2012. I can see Marriott soft-landing you to Gold but keeping you at Platinum after falling this short seems a bit overly generous IMHO.

they told me it would take a few days to update the status in their system. The CSR also said she could attach the new Plat status to any current or near future reservation...it only took 48 hours before plat status showed online.....make sure you get your "welcome gift" points as well.

No idea. I called MR to actually buy my status back for 2012 with 40k points and they told me that I didn't need to as I had been retained at Platinum for 2012 as a recognition of my past loyalty. I doubt that will ever happen again, but it saved me 40k points this year. I didn't ask for it - they just gave it to me.
