Taste of Gold/Platinum
You are given gold/platinum status for 90 days, and you must complete a certain number of nights/stays to retain that status for the remainder of the year plus the following year. This promotion is targeted only.
Road to Gold/Platinum (a.k.a. Gold/Platinum Challenge)
Currently, this will allow you to move up one level with a shortened stay criteria. You have 90 days to complete 6/9 stays to receive Gold/Platinum status. If you do no qualify, you are eligible to start another challenge one year and one day after the 90th day of the challenge you just did. When you sign up, the MR CSR should tell you the date you are eligible to do another challenge.
FAQ
Q: What qualifies as a stay?
A: One paid night at a Marriott-brand (including Ritz-Carlton Hotels) hotel. Cash+points rate does not qualify. SPG hotels does not qualify (as of 03/2017). Some exclusions may apply, someone please help fill this in.
Q: Can I simply book multiple, consecutive one-night stays at the same hotel?
A: No.
Q: Can I jump between multiple Marriotts in the area?
A: Yes. As long as you book at least one night at each property. Special care must be taken if the Marriott properties are next to each other. They may share the same back-office. While you may book one night at each property on consecutive nights, which should count as two stays, it may only count as one stay. A call to Marriott Rewards should split them up correctly.
Q: Can I book multiple nights at different properties for the same night to get multiple stay credits?
A: No. Regardless how many different places you book for the same night, it all counts as one stay.
Q: Can I sign up for both Gold and Platinum Challenges at the same time?
A: No. Only one challenge per year.
Q: I'm Silver, can I do the Platinum challenge?
A: No. This is only a one-level promotion. You are only eligible for the Gold challenge.
Q: Can a non-elite do the Gold Challenge
A: No. Must be Silver.
Q: I just completed my 6th/9th stay. When should I see my new status?
A: Good job! Your new status should appear after your 6th/9th stay posts to your account.
Q: Can I book a meeting to get a stay credit?
A: No. You will only receive 10 night credits, not a stay credit.

Yeah, after thinking that it was finally resolved (SPG Gold => Gold Elite) my partner gets an email from Marriott a couple of days ago just like the one posted immediately above (telling her that she will definitely get Platinum till January 2019, even though she is a matched SPG Gold via Amex Plat).
It's a joke that they're still not able to put out a consistent message on this. Someone else just posted an example of a similar email on another thread also.

Marriott status challenge qualifying stays
I have been Hilton Diamond for years and my work is taking me to places where it makes more sense to stay in Marriott properties. I called to see if they would offer me a status challenge which they did. 6 paid stays in 3 months to get Gold which shouldn't be too difficult. My question is would stays at SPG and Ritz Carlton properties count towards this status challenge?
Thx

Status challeges can differ, so you need to look at the T&C for your particular offer very carefully (including the exact starting and ending dates). Since you seem to be starting this before the new combined program begins on August 1, I would *guess* that the answer is yes to RC and no for SPG properties.

Not published, but terms and conditions are usually sent via email. Number of stays, time frame and usually a link to what is a qualifying stay such as this,https://www.marriott.com/rewards/terms/earning.mi.
Thank you. Of course they have to tell you what the rules are.

Is it possible to send an email to request the Plat Challenge? It is near impossible to get to a human being with the 801 468 4000 number which I was on hold for over 30 min and gave up. This is not a toll free number and should be answered much faster than a lengthy hold. There is also an annoying and very dumb robot that insists you are either calling for reservation or point balance... would not understand any other basic words / simple sentence to transfer to live person. Had to resort to press 0 many times. Then it was another extremely long wait with the ever-repeating "An agent will be with you momentarily." together with lots of statics.
I hope this would be just temporarily but it has been over a week since they made the announcement of the impending changes, the rush of phone calls should have long subsided, you would think.

Thanks all. I did it both ways when I eventually was able to talk to an agent via transfer from the 800 number used to redeem Travel Package versus the non-toll-free 801 number, and also sent in an email because the agent on the phone was really curt and in a hurry, also sounded like an at-home agent. I am not even sure she really understood what I was referring because when I asked if I would receive a confirmation email, she said she did not know. So I sent in an email just in case.
Received a confirmation email from Marriott Reward from another agent (internet correspondence specialis) tto confirm the Acceptance Platinum Challenge, apparently replying to the email I sent, though it stated another agent has registered my account for a Platinum Challenge effective 5/17/18. There is no email from the original phone agent who signed me up.
I am glad to get an email confirmation as some mentioned - there is a written record for that.
What is worthy to note is, these are the words " Agent xxxxx registered your account for a Platinum Elite Status challenge. The dates of this offer are from 05/17/2018, to 08/31/2018. (Please note that the dates cannot be changed or extended under any circumstances).
Once nine qualifying paid stays post to your account during the trial dates your account status will be upgraded to Platinum Elite through January 2020."
This seems to clarify 2 things =
1) You do not need to finish the challenge before July 31st. Though I would email back to make sure the Platinum Elite would automatically become the Platinum Premium.
2) The earned status is thru January 2020, NOT Feb or Mar like some were told or led to believe.
I recall years ago when I did a Gold Challenge, it was also good till January versus Feb or Mar. In fact I got a card showing January as well.

UPDATE
In order to become Plat Premiere Elite, the challenge needs to finish before July 31st. Else you would be Plat Elite if you finish in the normally allowed time i.e. end of August, and only get the equivalent of the old Gold. to Marriott.

That seems contrary to the statements saying you can earn status under the legacy rules... So if you make Plat under the old rules, you'd be PP in the new program. I think maybe someone was making up rules instead of doing the research. Now maybe that will fly if your challenge is done under the new rules which don't start until sometime in August.

This is from the memberrewards internet communication specialist who replied my question via email.
Marriott internet rep initially just gave me boiler plate answer about to maintain the status in 2019 onward.
So I replied to her asking for specific clarification -
.................................................. .................................................. ...........................................
if I complete my Platinum Elite Challenge in August, and thus become the Platinum Elite UNDER the OLD program, would my status automatically mapped to the Platinum Premiere Elite, or I would be a Platinum Elite which is actually the Gold under the old program? There is a big difference between Platinum Elite and Platinum Premiere Elite come August 1st.So what will my status be, when I finish the challenge in August? Because Platinum Elite gets identical benefit as the Gold in the current program, while the Platinum Premiere gets the identical benefit as the Platinum Elite in the current program and that is what I sign up for.I hope you can get a relevant answer from the manager.
.................................................. .................................................. ...........................................And received the following reply
Dear XXXX,Thank you for your reply. You will have The Platinum Elite Status not The Platinum Premier Status.Best Regards,Natasha G.Internet Correspondence SpecialistMarriott Rewards Guest Services
