SPG Gold

Seems like everyone here are all Plat's. How are gold's treated in terms of upgrades at this location? Wondering if I should take the risk or just pay a little bit more for a club room upfront.

As a Gold, you will probably receive a preferred room on a higher floor or with a better view. It really depends on the season - as a repeat Platinum guest, I received a standard room next to the elevator with a spectacular architecture view over the Easter holidays.

Also don’t expect to receive Club benefits, but I don’t think their club lounge offerings are worth the extra money.

Their Club lounge has reopened after months of “renovation” - the only thing that has changed is new carpets and marble floor. The food and beverage offerings are just as subpar as before and fellow patrons are just as aggressive as well. They did introduce longer cocktail hours (from 1730-1930 to 1700-2000) and all-day cut fruits and cookies, allegedly at Marriott’s request (staff’s words, not mine). Coca-cola products are still being served in the lounge.

Truly a shame that the club lounge reopened ahead of schedule and is as crappy as before! The club replacement benefit was outstanding value, but now the hotel is decidedly meh again. I have a bunch of HKD600-ish BRGs for the next few months, but even at that rate, I'm not excited to stay now.

Check In

Check in is interesting depending on where you choose to do so. There is a SPG area at the main entrance as well as various staffed areas located around the outskirts of the gaming area. I had two stays here with a regretable Holiday Inn stay in between, so the first stay I checked in where the buses from the outer harbour ferry terminal arrive. It was busy and took a while. Second checkin was earlier at two and I used the main SPG area in the lobby. There is also a couple of self checkin machines if you are just using cash. Security deposit is HKD 1000 a night.

Room

My first stay as a Planinum saw an upgrade from the base room to a deluxe executive suite. It was excellent, with a media room complete with blue tooth sound system that I could chill in with a glass of wine and loud tunes streamed off my iPad.

Second stay tag was an upgrade to their normal suite, which felt small by comparison but still had the same bathroom. Main difference was the size and the larger suite had a Nespresso machine, while the smaller one a percolater

Dining

I have read some comments about the lounge and disappointment at its opening after the various  feasts @ feast, perhaps because of my low expectations I was pleasantly surprised about the club lounge. Food for both breakfast and cocktails was close to what some hotels would offer as far as range goes in their main restaurant.

During cocktails there were six or so hot dishes, including some local style dishes, and despite staying two times with a day between stays, the food had varied each visit. It is a very large lounge, as you would expect for being the largest Sheraton in the world, and I had visited it at its best time which is during the week, I can imagine it gets quite busy at weekends.

Drinks during cocktails included a Chilean red wine, and spirits are on offer at the bar.

Location

This place is big, in fact it was sometimes an effort to get to your room, let alone navigate the complex.

There is a shopping mall on the second floor including a Marks and Spencer which sells some beer and wine, along with a host of upmarket stores. On there ground floor there is a McDonalds while the third floor has a hawker centre. Scattered throughout the complex are also restaurants, where SPG members get a discount.

Overall

I really enjoyed my stay here, I was lucky to catch the rates at $1000 all up for a room and for a casino property, I thought they treated frequent hotel guest stayers very well. My last experience at chain hotels within casinos has seen it rare for guests to get status treatment, more often than not money talks and it’s the casino guests who get the perks. A nice change.

If your looking at a stay mid week it’s a great option. If your Australian, there is even a touch of home:

Is it only my computer has issues, or do some of you also view the above photos in the wrong orientation?

Strangely both this and the St Regis appear booked out for the next 5-6 days. Anyone know why?

Not strange at all. May golden week holiday, the week surrounding May 1st, is a major holiday in China and Japan. Major holiday weeks in China are weeks around Chinese New Year, May golden week and October golden week when pretty much entire country goes on vacation

Try Bruno Mars in concert, similar for Celine Dion in June.

Agreed with the others; avoid during Chinese New Year, May week, and pretty much most of October.

Just expect it to be crowded with lots of tourists roaming around every corner of the hotel.

Now that I have had a look on the PC I see what you mean, I did the review on an iPAD which must support auto orientation of images.

I would go as far as to say that it's a bit of a frenzy, especially during check in and check out. There will be tourists buzzing everywhere. You've been warned!

If you are an SPG member, literally line up at the dedicated SPG check-in counter. No need to line up around the snake, only to find out you didn't have to. I've been burned this way several times!
