However of note for you are some posts in that thread suggesting that MR in a AMEX checking account can survive after AMEX shuts all credit/charge cards.

What does it mean MR in a checking account? Aren't all MR in the same pool?

Looks like Amex closed all my accounts today (or maybe yesterday) :(

This includes a business platinum that I was 1k from hitting the 250k sign up bonus. In total 6 cards. My best guess is a lot of $500 grocery store purchases (almost all 3rd party gift cards and not visa or MC) on Hilton Surpass and consumer gold cards

Yes, all MR in the same pool, I think what they're saying is if you have a checking account and Amex closes your credit cards, the checking account will become a safe haven for your MR points and allow you to keep or at least use them.

What was the volume of gift cards you were buying?

$15k/year on Surpass. Probably a little more on gold

Did you try to transfer points out today? Do you have a checking account?

I don't have a checking account. Just got emails for 2 of them. Unable to access MR in app or website

You might be able to transfer via phone on the first day of the shutdown. Call ASAP. HUCA if needed. You need to have transfer partners linked already

Will keep trying, but doesn't look good. First agent was from membership rewards and told me I could only transfer if I lived in New York (by law). 2nd agent tried, but it wasn't working so she put me on hold to call membership rewards department and came back saying they couldn't be transferred because of the reason for account closure

A bit disconcerting, as Amex does not shut down accounts frequently.
Is there more to the story than just buying third party gift cards (unless we're talking $50K worth )

In the T&C's is the warning that GC purchases don't count for SUBs. But that does not mean getting shut down!

Amex's usual modus operandi is to just deny you the credit for the SUB, not shutter all of your accounts.
Anything else you can add to this DP?

Not really. I haven't done any true MS in years and pretty much just buy 3rd party gift cards for reselling. Had about 10k charge from a cruise line a month ago to hit large portion of biz plat sign up bonus that was mostly just adding to slot and cashing out at cashier, but I'd expect cruise line to be mad about that, not Amex

Maybe Amex didn't like your gambling addiction and thought you're high risk? /s

The whole cruise all comes across as a single charge, but maybe they were able to see an itemized version. I'd definitely say $30k/year gift cards is more likely cause, but I doubt we'll ever know for sure

Amex can see itemized receipts since they are the bank and the credit card payment processor. Other banks can't do that (e.g. Visa doesn't pass this info to Chase).

Not sure this is accurate...

Before Barclay merged their personal and business cards. the business set up would show me detailed receipts on purchases, including the items purchased. That went away when they merged it all onto one log on
