I have had American Express cards for over 8 years. Recently, I underwent an Amex Financial Review and submitted Form 4506-C. Based on the tax documents they received from the IRS, Amex closed all of my personal and business cards.
They told me that the information on my tax documents—specifically my reported income—did not align with my spending, so they decided to close my accounts. The reason for the closure was not rewards abuse. After the shutdown, I was still able to redeem all of my remaining Membership Rewards points. I was also told that I am not blacklisted and that I can apply for new cards again at any time. My question is: based on past data points, how soon might I have a reasonable chance of being approved for a new card? I’m trying to understand how long I should wait. Is one month enough, or is it more realistic to wait something like a year? Are you based in NY? My understanding is that you will forfeit all your MR if they close all your MR accounts - aside from NY residents where you have 90 days after closer to redeem your MR. |
After banking with TD Bank for a decade or two, I just received a letter via UPS indicating that my account is being shut down in a few weeks. I've been depositing MO's for years, which likely did it to me, as I have zero blemished on my account.

DP - I got a shutdown notification from Chase. All cards shut, points frozen. Called them up and was told high balance and not using cards as intended.
High balance was on a non-chase card. I was near my limit, when a direct debit hit (I had totally forgotten about this DD) putting me well over my credit limit. A declined purchase on a Chase card put eyes on my account which led to them seeing that I was over my limit on a different bank. Disaster. Explained to the rep that this was all a big misunderstanding in terms of the DD issue. Paid down all debt on all my cards, then called back a month later (as instructed by rep). Rep questioned some large giftcard.com purchases on one of the chase cards. Was able to explain the large VGC purchase by saying I wanted to use the VGC's to pay for home renovation work where contractor would not take credit cards, and was buying in bulk due to a zero fee sale. This part really had me worried, but I think I was helped by the fact it had been several months since the VGC purchases with this card. Luckily did not have to explain sock drawer cards, as they do not help show I am a profitable customer In the end, they have just re-instated the accounts and I will get my points back in the next month. It was a close call and not one I want to re-live Posting so people know there is some chance of recovery with Chase |

I would not be surprised, however, if you still get a notification of closure in the next month or two, when your account goes in front of the credit committee and is reevaluated. Then again, maybe you have been a really profitable customer in the past. Fingers crossed that all goes well ;) |

I just got notified today that my Barclays AA Silver card will not transition to Citi and instead will convert to an Arrivals+ card. I had previously received emails form Citi that my card would be transitioning to them. I did get shutdown by them a few years ago, so I am wondering if they finally ran some check and don't want to buy my account. Alternatively, I do have a mid-cycle balance higher than my credit limit, so perhaps their underwriting didn't like that. Anyone else in a similar situation?

I was shut down by Citi last year, opened a Barclays AA card afterwards.
Have received the email that my card will transition to Citi, but haven’t heard anything else yet. |

Exactly the same thing happened today to me too..and they also closed my Aviator account, not sure that's the way it works when converting or not
I guess 2026 is the last year I get ConciergeKey by spend only. |
I was shut down by Citi, but surprisingly, they migrated my Barclays AA card over.
They took away ~300k Citi points as part of the shutdown and ignored all my letters regarding the Citi points. They only answered regarding my AA points, telling me that they were already transferred to AA... Now I'm wondering if i should ask about the Citi points again, or if I better let sleeping dogs lie... The thing is, I updated my address to New York shortly before they shut me down, so in theory, they should have given me 90 days to redeem the points... |
