My experience has been that if your VGC is denied for any reason, it is basically blocked for a certain period of time.
I have found that if I let the thing age for about a day, it will then work fine if I don't again use it where it will be denied.

Example: I tried to load a Staples $200 VGC at the MC to BB and it was declined. Going to the cashier immediately and using the same card again failed. Waiting a day and doing the load at the cashier initially then succeeded. Data point of ....three times with similar events and results. :D

Thanks for your data points, my data points so far: I cannot do split payments of $200 Staples VGC or even a split payment between Staples VGC and Sutton debit cards. Doing one swipe at Wally MC of $200 worked oddly enough sometimes but don't on other days so YMMV on that one but one swipe for $200 normally worked at cashier. For grocery stores MO, only 1 swipe works for this card even though doing two would still qualify for the $475 limit they placed.

Today I tried to buy MO at WMT with 2 OD VGCs. First one failed - debit not available. Second approved, then tried first one again - failed. Then used it to pay taxes, accepted without an issue.

Is it $475? I used $480 today.

Can someone explain how this could happen?

Do we have any recent data points with swiping multiple (4) Everywhere cards from OD at WM for a MO? I swiped a $200 Everywhere with a $500 USB yesterday without issues for a $699 MO, but haven't tried more than just the one of the Everywhere's in succession.

Just did 3 transactions of 798.xx or 799.xx and no issues. A few cards gave errors on first swipe, but worked on 2nd.

My $200 Style Everywhere card rejected right off the rip on the first swipe this morning ($199 MO) at my go to grocery that worked yesterday, tried two different $200 SE's (there is an almost zero chance that someone was in there before me, I know the store well as it pertains to velocity limits). Then used a different SE that I used yesterday that I left a a few pennies on at the self check out at a different grocery store an hour later and it debited fine to close it out to 0. Didn't think BHN had figured out how to distinguish between customer service and Self Check out at grocery stores but it appears they may have.

Thank you for that information. At least that still works. I'll give it a whirl this evening.

The portable terminal has a selection of credit or debit or other AFTER you swipe.

For Serve load at WM, does BHN visa card has the same 475 max? Sorry for the newbie question, did not find answer going thru the forum. I've 500 BHN VGC bought from Gelson's grocery.

I want to try unloading a BHN $500 MCGC via a MO at a grocery store (WD or Publix). I'm not aiming to recover the whole amount -- will take whatever is more likely to work and spend the rest organically. Any advice what I should try?
  • What's a reasonable $ limit for one swipe?
  • Is there a velocity limit for swipes on a single MO machine in a given time?
  • Are all limits set by BHN or some of them are suspected to be imposed by store chains?

To keep it simple, just do 1 swipe for 475, (nice round number) and spend the 25 balance organically, There is a velocity limit so do not line up behind another MS'er. The limits are hardcoded so same at all grocery IME (except for WM and Safeway which have the 99 limit)
