one of my local store now no longer allows purch 1 GC at a time or separate trxn; either 1 or all cards; i thought to ask why a recent change; the reply was 1 acct per person; if there's household members, he/she should be present to buy

oh well, if another store is not on the way, will take more time & effort daily at that store

Ahhh it all makes sense now! I was so confused when folks were talking about buying balloons. I'm over there thinking people were buying hundreds of dollars of blow-up balloons to earn points
Steve in Olympia likes this.

At this point there are still a number of small banks issuing swipe cards for some reason in the US. I am a little surprised the card issuing networks are even allowing that at this point.

If you go to Canada and use a swipe card, you will get some real scrutiny. Use it at a gas pump or self checkout? Good luck. It won't work. Swipe cards are so rarely used there, when they get one, they really give the transaction the one over.

It should be that way in the US too. But since some small banks still issue swipe cards, it isn't...

The merchant systems should be coded whenever a swipe card is used to verify the last four digits of the card number and verify signature. Maybe even have the cashier key in the expiration date just as another precaution against a skimmed card. I also agree with the policy prohibiting gift card transactions with a swipe card, but am concerned it may go against the "honor all cards" rules these card networks have. One regional grocery chain in northern California last year had some major issues with skimmed swipe cards being used in a couple of its stores and self checkouts; it was an organized theft. Their solution was to push down an update which stopped allowing customers to swipe those cards (the terminal would error) then prompt the cashier to take the card and verify it then swipe it (still on the customer facing pinpad, and due to the configuration of this chain's cashier unload checkstands this meant the cashier had to walk around the side of the register to do this). Well, that solution lasted a matter of days before it was un-done because they learned so many legitimate customers still had swipe cards.

But oh well, I was at 2 different merchants today that were still swipe only and not a chip reader in sight. So we just aren't there yet.

What about magstripe fallback when the chip is unreadable? Or cloned cards that contain a fake chip that won't process? Is the merchant still protected then if the magstripe fallback is used when the card is supposed to have an EMV chip? Is there any documentation on that recent liability shift? (I'm just curious to read what it says because I can't find anything on it).

Ironically, in my division, store employees are unofficially encouraged to allow/encourage multiple accounts because it increases J4U usage. The district is evaluated on J4U usage vs overall number of transactions, and they're always trying to get the stores to push the program because the numbers are abysmally low.

I don't know that level of detail. It's probably in the merchant agreement. You'd think if a chip doesn't work but the merchant accepts it, it wouldn't be there problem since they're still set up to take chip cards.

Credit card companies don't even require signatures any more (although some merchants still have not stopped requiring them).

Credit card fraud is about reducing risk, not eliminating it.

Doubtful. There's typically a long list of "can't be used for..." associated with such discounts.

I'm not sure if this is a company-wide policy, but coupons (except J4U offers) are not accepted for gift cards (in my division; always has been the case for as long as I've worked for them).

Just tried to use P2’s J4U $10 off $100 or more on a variable $500; worked for me earlier this week but didn’t work for this morning’s transaction. I’ll try one more time today with a different card.
