There shouldn't be any effect to CR as this is a prepaid card and the SSN was only used for identity verification. A credit check was not even pulled on these accounts.

2 of 2 shutdown.

I just got an offer in the mail for the AMEX Business Gold with a 75k point sign up bonus ($5k in 3 months). In the T&C it states that reloadable or prepaid gift cards do not count towards the spending requirement.

I don't recall ever seeing that language before and I have always bought GC (VGC and AGC) with AMEX to meet min spend.

Good thing the $300 gift cards at Staples came back in stock in time for me to order 6 of them last night....:(

It seems to me that it would have been far easier for them to do away with debit loads at WM instead of mass closing accounts. I see little use for debit loads (at least anything of any significant $ amount) outside of MS. Given the number of reports of very-lightly-MSed cards getting shut down, this is clearly not a very conservative approach.

That was my thought too...Just wanted to see if others thought the same.

Has ANYONE actually used Serve/BB as a credit card for purchases? Perhaps that was the trigger. I see plenty of people saying they didn't do max loads and only used some BP or checks, but no one has said they used it as a CC. Perhaps that was the trigger? No CC usage, bang, dead?

I know I used RB at Target, but never used my Serve as a CC.

I have seen that several times before and never had an issue meeting minimum spend with VGC bought at Simon. I wouldn't sweat it. Worry about the liquidation side, given this thread tho :(

My guess is no. While everyone is calling this an account "shut-down", it isn't. Amex isn't closing your account, they're asking you to close your account. No negative credit report impact there.

Bluebird shutdown

Just came back from overseas last night. Had plans to go load the 3 BB and 1 Serve this morning. Checked the e-mail and saw the shutdown e-mails few minutes ago.

gofarhaveacigar Jan 8, 2016 9:28 am

None of my 4 accounts (3 BB, 1 Serve) have been shut down. I haven't use the Bluebird accounts or the Serve (just converted from BB to Serve) since May.

And now the $11K minimum spend for my recent app o rama is going to be that much harder to reach. Completing the $20K spend for 100K Avios just got daunting......

Serve was used to purchase as credit card...but only when an amex offer was attached to the acct

shitrus Jan 8, 2016 9:30 am

huh.

both my wife and my accounts are still active, and I just did two loads/unloads worth $1976.19

bergec Jan 8, 2016 9:31 am

Any possibility this is an Amex error given the number of cards with minimal usage being shut down? Does anyone know of a BB that didn't get shut down?
